indicates that a majority of Americans is ready for legislation that
would regulate the abuse of citizen data, yet they still think they
can have the cake for free:
"Yet Americans seem to want it both ways. A majority would be willing to share information about themselves in order to use online services for free, while only a few experienced negative consequences from their online activities."
There is no "information about themselves" that doesn't also affect
others. If we in masses publicly show how healthy we are, we make it
easy to discriminate the sick. Insurance business becomes a fake if it
only picks the people that are healthy - and that is just an example.
Being allowed to sell your data is like being allowed to drive a car
at night with your lights off. You aren't just endangering yourself, you
are a risk to everyone you meet.
If a majority of population is allowed to sell information "about themselves"
in order to read an article for free, democracy is undermined. The secrecy
of people's thoughts and opinions is fundamental for a healthy democracy.
If you're part of a predictable populace instead, you have kissed your
liberties good-bye.
Stop calling it privacy. We are talking civil liberties.
Most democratic countries possess the equivalent of a Constitution.
In most cases it includes Secrecy of Correspondence - not as a right, but
as a necessity for the successful practice of democracy. And it includes
Freedom of Assembly - with our mobile phones leaking information who is
meeting who, where did this requirement for a successful democracy go?
Self determination is great when we are talking about crunchy vs smooth
peanut butter, also when we are talking about the human beings we find
atractive, but being allowed to sell data about ourselves is plain
anti-constitutional. Let's stop talking of self determination when we are
actually talking of the greatest public good mankind has ever developed.
We are insulting the people that lost their lives to give us democracy.
