Dear members of BigDataSur,

I'm writing to invite you to NATM.1, the first planning meeting of the
Non Aligned Technologies Movement (NATM). Please see the details below.

For a bit of background info, see my op-ed here
<https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2020/9/8/to-fight-data-colonialism-we-need-a-non-aligned-tech-movement/>
.

You might be asking yourself why yet another activist-scholarly group
around ICT's is needed at this point, and that is a valid question. I
personally see this as a very exciting time when various groups are
coalescing not so much around unique issues (the issues are the same across
the board) but around different communities of practice and approaches.
NATM is not meant to compete with BigDatSur and Tierra Común, but to build
bridges. The focus of NATM will not be on the Global South, but on
constructing a global movement that tackles the challenges of data
colonialism globally. If you are interested in being part of those
conversations, feel free to join us.

Let me know if you have any questions, and I am looking forward to seeing
you there.

All my best,

Ulises

NATM.1
The first planning meeting of the
NON ALIGNED TECHNOLOGIES MOVEMENT
(and 4th Tierra Común event)

November 24/25, 2020

Pushing back against data colonialism presents challenges that cannot be
tackled by individual people, organizations or countries. Please join us in
a conversation about what it would take to form a Non Aligned Technologies
Movement (NATM), a worldwide alliance that seeks to define and claim
technosocial spaces beyond the profit-motivated model of Silicon Valley and
the control-motivated model of the Chinese Communist Party, the two centers
of power of a new extractivist order.

The meeting is scheduled for Nov 24 (Nov 25 in some areas) at the following
times:

Mexico City 1pm
New York 2pm
Buenos Aires 4pm
London 7pm
Helsinki 9pm
Sydney (Nov 25) 6am
Waikato (Nov 25) 8am

During this 1.5 hour meeting, we will:

-Meet some of the people interested in this movement.

-Discuss what the goals and focus areas of the movement should be.

-Identify how you and your organization can engage with NATM.

-Propose ways in which to formally launch the movement.

-Engage in a "future history" exercise to imagine how NATM can succeed.

If you are interested in joining us, please visit rsvp.nonalignedtech.net.

We will send you an email with the Jitsi link and instructions before the
day of the meeting.

We are trying to keep the audience for this first meeting relatively small,
but if you think of someone who is a perfect fit for this initiative, feel
free to invite them by sending them this message.

The meeting is organized by Ulises A. Mejias and Juan Ortiz Freuler, with
support from Tierra Común.
