The NYTimes Fixes column <http://www.nytimes.com/fixes> is starting a
project for which we need some smart tech-savvy folks interested in
journalism and social change.
The weekly column, which is written by noted authors/journalists Tina
Rosenberg and David Bornstein, explores solutions to major social problems.
More than 120 columns explore practical solutions to dozens of global
challenges in health, education, economic development, and many other
fields, always with an eye for what makes them work.
Many educators and students have expressed a desire to use Fixes in their
course work -- particularly those interested in social innovation and
social enterprise. We are looking to build a new platform that connects
these journalistic resources and 'mini case studies' with the needs of
teachers and students. Specifically, we would like to create an open-source
platform called "Fixes U" on which people can upload lesson plans and other
activities based on Fixes material, and other highly-accessible teaching
resources. We would also like to use this platform for hosting things like
video contests and webinars. The site should have a robust local and
global tagging system, an easily navigable database, a blogging platform,
and an effective internal search tool. The audience will consist primarily
of educators, students, and development practitioners -- but we envision
that it could be a useful resource for policy makers, entrepreneurs, and
others interested in social change.
The ideal candidate should have experience in web design, preferably in
creating open-source platforms, and an interest in social change. He/she
will be working with a team in New York, but does not need to be based here.
Details are yet to be ironed out, but we will likely need someone part-time
for the next six months to develop the website. Please contact Sarika
Bansal (sarika.bansal at gmail.com) if you are interested.
