Does anyone know if Facebook Zero is available widely in Egypt?
Also, I've always felt that the most democratizing aspect of the Net is the
ability for people to organize and communicate in groups. The freedom of
assembly that makes speech expontentially more powerful (and accountable,
effective).
So assuming a desire for greater democracy and openness, how about Facebook
Pages by region or even parliamentary constituency?
(In my trip to Kenya, it was clear that Facebook Zero was a really big deal
because it essentially makes group SMS-like communication free with many of
the popular Nokia handsets that dominate. In one of my speeches, a student
spoke of his effort to create a Facebook page for his home parlimentary
constituency for all the discuss national issues from that area. I am
pondering making such a proposal in the U.S. for 2012 for the new 435 house
districts (would require a volunteer for each page), why not have Egypt
teach us a lesson in how that might work in a more coordinated way?)
