### Digital Rights in the Community ###
*** News and Announcements ***
1. Ford Global Fellows Announced
The Ford Global Fellowship has announced their new fellows - 48 amazing
leaders from around the world who are solving local challenges driven by
global systems of inequality. Among the lineup are two beloved digital
rights defenders - Tawanda Mugari and Dhyta Caturani.
https://www.fordfoundation.org/work/investing-in-individuals/the-ford-global-fellowship/
2. Facebook and the Monetisation of Hate: Ideas to hold platforms
accountable
APC has published an OpEd following the revelations by a Facebook
whistleblower about the company’s decision to prioritize profit over user
safety and human rights. In the OpED, they list various concerns that civil
society organizations have observed and raised over the years regarding
Facebook’s operations and implementation of community standards, and ideas
of how to go forward.

In addition, on October 12, ARTICLE 19 published a solution they have been
developing called the Social Media Council - a model for multi-stakeholder,
voluntary-compliance mechanism that provides a transparent and independent
forum to address content moderation issues on the basis of international
human rights.

### Learning Resources ###
1. Report on Online Harassment Against Women Journalists in the Iranian
Diaspora
This new report by ARTICLE 19 and Committee to Protect Journalists looks
into the toxic and often violent space women journalists reporting on Iran
inhabit. A number of women journalists from the Iranian diaspora were
interviewed who cover Iran for various media outlets and who face increased
and concerning levels of online harassment and abuse as a result of their
work.

2. Report on how Censorship and Misinformation are having a Devastating
Impact on People’s Lives
New Amnesty report outlines how governments are abusing legislation to
silence journalists and media outlets. China, Russia, Philippines,
Nicaragua, and Tanzania are among the many countries censoring journalists.
Meanwhile, social media companies are facilitating the rapid spread of
Covid-19 misinformation, resulting in five million people having lost
their lives.

3. Paradigm Initiative (PIN) Premieres 'FOCUS', a Short Film on Digital
Rights and Inclusion
FOCUS is a short film showcasing the state of digital rights and inclusion
across Africa. Directed by Tolulope Ajayi, it draws from PIN's 2020 annual
digital rights and inclusion report dubbed Londa.

4. Guide for Teenagers to Fight Sexual Abuse Online
A Latin American organization focused on digital rights, JAAKCLAC, has just
launched a digital guide geared towards teenagers, focused on helping
combat sexual abuse on the internet. The guide was co-created through mixed
workshops, and virtual and in-person interviews with adults and teenagers
from civil society organizations, digital security trainers, and many more.
It was supported by Derechos Digitales.

5. Fall Bootcamp: LGBTQ+ Digital Safety and Online Abuse Defense

6. Even the Finest Warriors
Check out the book by Yara Sallam, Egyptian feminist and human rights
advocate, called
Even the Finest of Warriors. The book is focused on psychological health,
general exhaustion, financial security, as well as growing old as neglected
intersections, despite how important they are in the context of documenting
the struggle of women in the public space.

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###
1. LinkedIn Shuts Down in China over Government Censorship
LinkedIn will sunset the localized version of its app in China and will
instead launch a new job boards app called "InJobs" later this year. The
company said it's making these changes because it's facing "a significantly
more challenging operating environment and greater compliance requirements
in China." The news comes weeks after Axios China Reporter Bethany
Allen-Ebrahimian reported that LinkedIn blocked the profiles of several
U.S. journalists from the company's China-based platform, citing
"prohibited content."

2. Social Media Censorship Forces Viennese Museums to Take Their Art to
OnlyFans
In July, Tik Tok first suspended and then blocked Albertina Museum’s
account for displaying the art of Nobuyoshi Araki, whose photographs often
feature sexually explicit images of nude women. Then in September, when the
Leopold Museum promoted its 20th anniversary by posting a work by Art
Nouveau illustrator Koloman Moser, Facebook’s algorithms flagged the
campaign as “potentially pornographic”. In response, Vienna’s museums are
displaying their works on OnlyFans, however this will come at a cost to
lovers of art. Censoring content this way prevents people from exploring
ideas, reduces dialogue, and shrinks public knowledge for everyone.

3. China Is Watching You
With generous state support at home and low-cost sales abroad, Hikvision
has become the world’s surveillance heavyweight. Its facilities can churn
out 260,000 cameras daily—two for every three people born each day. In
2019, it produced nearly a quarter of the world’s surveillance cameras,
with sales in more than 150 countries. Among the policies that Hikvision’s
products have supported is China’s wide-ranging crackdown against the
predominantly Muslim Uyghurs and other minority groups in the western
province of Xinjiang.

Foundation has done on the topic of surveillance cameras

4. Swaziland: eSwatini Government Shuts Down Internet
The Eswatini government shut down the internet last Friday for two hours as
pro-democracy protests intensified. A new wave of unrest has hit Africa's
last absolute monarchy, three months after government forces quashed
earlier rioting. There was also an internet outage during the June and July
unrest.

This past june, the #KeepItOn coalition asked the Eswatini government for
immediate reinstatement of the internet.

5. Mobile Users Across Bangladesh Face 3G, 4G Internet Outage
Mobile users in Bangladesh have reported they were facing an outage of
high-speed internet since early Friday. Mobile phone operators, however,
said 3G and 4G data services were shut down at 5am on Friday following
instructions from the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation.

6. Facial Recognition in UK Schools Prompts Blowback from Privacy
Campaigners
Privacy campaigners on Monday slammed a plan to use facial recognition on
thousands of schoolchildren in Scotland, warning that Britain is veering
away from the EU on basic principles of data protection.
