*** RSVP for the 2021 Community Health Village ***
The presenters for the first ever Community Health Village have been
selected! We are incredibly grateful to everyone that submitted
proposals—your work is invaluable and there will be many future
opportunities for individuals to share their work and experiences on
community health!
This year’s theme is Sustainable Networks & Movements, and the sessions
speak to the issues and needs community members have shared with us in the
last year. The village will feature diverse mental healthcare practitioners
ranging from transdisciplinary designers to Mayan spiritual healers. Topics
are diverse too, ranging from conflict resolution to regenerative activism
to the basics of peer-led psychosocial support!
RSVP as soon as you can, as some sessions have caps. Sessions will take
place during the month of November in either Big Blue Button or Zoom.

The UX team at the Tor project has launched a survey to learn more about
how and why Tor users use VPNs. If you are a Tor Browser user and use VPNs
on any device, you can help them by taking this short survey, which is
anonymous and features 22 questions. It should take you only 10 minutes to

*** The Internet Archive's New Tool Peers into Our Dystopian Digital Future

The Internet Archive’s “Wayback Machine” is an invaluable tool, preserving
the internet’s complex history for public eyes. Now, to celebrate the
organization’s 25th anniversary, the Internet Archive has created a tool
that peers in the opposite direction, looking at what the internet might
look like in the future. Key themes are online censorship, advertising and
tracking, and shutdowns. Offers a glimpse into the future of the Internet.

Internews is hosting a Pluggable Transport Implementers’ Meeting (PTIM)
October 19-21, 2021. Pluggable Transports (PT) are an important defense
against Internet censorship and surveillance. Like last year, the event
will be 100% virtual and will allow lots of time for direct interactions
with other developers and beneficiaries of your work. By bringing together
members of the PT community, Internews aim to provide a space of
interaction in the world of Pluggable Transports.

*** Power shifts from Big Tech as Digital Crackdowns Intensify ***
Internet freedom around the world has dropped for the 11th consecutive
year, according to an annual report from Freedom House, a non-profit
focused on expanding freedom and democracy. The findings suggest that a
broader shift in power from tech companies to nation states over the past
year has resulted in "a record-breaking crackdown" on freedom of expression
online.

The Moscow metro system is introducing a new contactless payment system
using facial recognition software despite serious concerns from privacy and
security advocates about the technology.

*** US Schools Gave Kids Laptops during the Pandemic. Then they Spied on
Them ***
Thousands of school districts across the United States have installed
surveillance software on school-provided devices to monitor their students’
online interactions. If a student emails or chats with another student
saying they’ve been thinking of hurting themselves or that there is trouble
at home, an AI bot or a human moderator watching over the messages in real
time can send an alert to a teacher or administrator, allowing the teacher
to jump in within minutes and ask if everything is OK.

The Pegasus scandal has shown that the Israeli government has
systematically ignored and violated people's right to privacy. Government
attacks on journalists and critics of the Israeli authorities' behavior
have become so pervasive that they are breeding an environment of fear.
Growing numbers of public figures and private citizens are afraid that the
government will steal and publicise their private data to damage their
reputations and careers.
