*** Censorship, Surveillance and Profits: A Hard Bargain for Apple in China ***

An investigation by The New York Times reveals how Apple has given in
to escalating demands from the Chinese authorities. This includes
Apple storing the personal data of Chinese customers in data centers
that are physically managed by Chinese state employees. Apple
employees are not working in the data centers, and they no longer have
the encryption keys.

*** Colombia Protests Stretch into Fourth Week, Demonstrators Vow to
Carry On ***

Colombia's wave of anti-government protests entered their fourth week
on Wednesday, as unions, student groups and others turned out at
marches to demand social change amid intermittent talks between the
government and strike organizers. The protests have been marked by
violence by both police and civilians. The attorney general's office
has confirmed 15 deaths connected to protests, while one human rights
group tallies more than 40 deaths.

Both Facebook and Instagram are facing allegations of censorship
following the erratic, widespread removal of recent posts from
pro-Palestinian users critical of the Israeli government, including

*** Reports Expose Myanmar Junta’s Planned Internet Stranglehold ***

Reuters published a detailed report revealing that Myanmar’s telecom
and Internet service providers were ordered to install intercept
spyware in the months leading up to the military coup in February. The
investigation, by Fanny Potkin and Poppy McPherson, claims that this
spyware technology would allow the country’s armed forces to eavesdrop
on the communications of citizens.

The website of Belarus' leading independent media outlet, TUT.BY, has
been blocked by authorities after a series of raids. Editors of the
channel reported on Tuesday that their offices were searched by agents
of the Belarusian Financial Investigation Department (DFR).

*** Inside the US Post Office’s Internet Surveillance Program ***

The post office’s law enforcement arm has faced intense congressional
scrutiny in recent weeks over its Internet Covert Operations Program
(iCOP), which tracks social media posts of Americans and shares that
information with other law enforcement agencies. Among the tools used
by the analysts is Clearview AI, a facial recognition software that
scrapes images off public websites.
