*** 7amleh’s Latest Report: The Attacks on Palestinian Digital Rights ***

The Arab Center for the Development of Social Media issued a new
report entitled “The Attacks on Palestinian Digital Rights.” The
report is based on the reporting of digital rights violations from May
6 - 19 and the responses of social media companies. The report shows
increases in attacks on Palestinian digital rights and details the
violations on various social media and technology platforms, including
the spread of hate speech and incitement against Palestinians and
Arabs in the Hebrew language.

*** China: The Full Story of the Stunning RSA Hack Can Finally Be Told ***

The RSA breach redefined the cybersecurity landscape. The company’s
nightmare was a wake-up call not only for the information security
industry—the worst-ever hack of a cybersecurity firm to date—but also
a warning to the rest of the world. Timo Hirvonen, a researcher at
security firm F-Secure, which published an outside analysis of the
breach, saw it as a disturbing demonstration of the growing threat
posed by a new class of state-sponsored hackers.

*** India says WhatsApp’s Lawsuit Over New Regulations a Clear Act of
Defiance ***

India said on Wednesday that WhatsApp’s lawsuit challenging the new
local IT rules is an “unfortunate last moment” attempt to prevent new
regulations from going into effect in “a clear act of defiance,” and
said the Facebook-owned service hadn’t raised any specific objection
about the traceability requirement in writing in more than two and a
half years.

*** ‘60 Minutes’ Ran a Segment on Racial Bias in Facial Recognition
Leaving Out the Black Women Who Pioneered the Research ***

60 Minutes and CBS are being criticized for failing to even mention
the contributions of Joy Buolamwini, Timnit Gebru, and Inioluwa
Deborah Raji, Black female scientists who have done groundbreaking
research on racial bias in artificial intelligence, much of which
predates the December 2019 NIST study the segment refers to as a
“landmark study.”

*** Germany: Court Rules Encrypted Email Provider Tutanota Must
Monitor Messages in Blackmail Case ***

The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in Germany has ruled that encrypted
email provider Tutanota must monitor for three months the messages of
accounts implicated in a blackmail case. The decision comes months
after the Regional Court of Cologne ruled that Tutanota must provide
said emails. Tutanota had asked BGH to re-examine that decision given
that Tutanota does not consider itself a telecommunications service
and therefore should not be required to monitor them under German law.

*** Apple Employees Are Going Public about Workplace Issues ***

Apple employees are quick to point out that they’ve been organizing
internally for years. In 2020, they pushed the company to move away
from using the terms “master” and “slave” in engineering contexts
where one process controlled another, part of an industry-wide shift
away from the labels.

*** ‘Coded Bias’ Is an Essential Introduction To Algorithmic Bias and
the Systems that Gave Rise To It ***

The documentary is the kind of film that can and should be shown in
countless high school classrooms, where students themselves are
subjected to various AI systems in the post-pandemic age of Zoom. It's
a refreshingly digestible introduction to the myriad ways algorithmic
bias has infiltrated every aspect of our lives—from racist facial

*** New from The Engine Room: Tech Tools for Human Rights Documenters ***

In 2020, The Engine Room conducted research with PILPG and HURIDOCS to
gain insight into how technology could better fit the needs of human
rights documenters, particularly in the context of transitional
justice. They have now published an adapted excerpt of the findings,
which focuses primarily on the ‘tools’ part of this work.

*** Mozilla’s Common Voice Project To Be the First Speech Smart
Assistant Supporting an African Language ***

Speech smart assistants currently do not support any African language,
but now Mozilla’s Common Voice project is building a dataset for
Kiswahili which is spoken by more than a 100 million people in Kenya,
Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan. They have just
been awarded almost $5M for the project.
