*** Chinese Hacking Spree Hit an ‘Astronomical’ Number of Victims ***
Hafnium has now exploited zero-day vulnerabilities in Microsoft's
Exchange servers' Outlook Web Access to indiscriminately compromise no
fewer than tens of thousands of email servers. The affected networks,
which likely include those of small and medium-size organizations more
than the large enterprises that tend to use cloud-based email systems,
appear to have been hacked indiscriminately via automated scanning.

*** Myanmar: Internet Blocks and Internet Outages Following Military Coup ***
In a recent report, OONI shares the data on the blocking of social
media, Wikipedia, and circumvention tool sites in Myanmar following
the military coup. To demonstrate the internet outages that Myanmar
experienced every night over the past weeks, they share IODA data (and
other public data sources monitoring internet traffic).

*** Freedom House: India’s Status has Declined to Partly Free ***
In its response to a recent report by Freedom House that claimed
India’s status as a free country has declined to “partly free”, the
Narendra Modi government has said that the characterisation is
“misleading, incorrect and misplaced”.

*** Tim Berners-Lee says Africa’s Internet Shutdowns Shouldn’t be Tolerated **
Internet shutdowns have become increasingly common in Africa to fight
dissent and restrict protest action, particularly during elections or
moments of economic crisis. For Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the
world wide web, these actions are violations that the world cannot
ignore.

*** Clubhouse: Are Users in the Middle East Safe from Digital
Authoritarianism? ***
>From Egypt to Oman, Turkey to Saudi Arabia, users have been gathering
to discuss politics, identity, sexuality, patriarchy, religion and
racism - even to coordinate protests. But in spite of the enthusiasm,
Clubhouse appears to be unsafe. The app collects reams of data on
users, who are easily identifiable, while there's little stopping
others - including pro-government informants or secret police - from
surveilling or doxxing users talking about taboo or sensitive topics.

*** Throttling of Twitter Domains in Russia ***
Starting on March 10th, access to Twitter-related domains, like
twimg.com and t.co, was throttled in Russia. As a side effect, all
domains containing "t.co" as a substring were throttled, including,
for example, rt.com, reddit.com, and microsoft.com.

*** WhatsApp’s New Privacy Policy: What It Is and What It Isn’t ***
Tibet Action Institute’s TIbCERT Team takes a deep view of WhatsApp’s
new privacy policy and clarifies all the misinformation that has been
circulating since January 2021 about this policy.

*** Sharing Spaces With Men During the COVID-19 Pandemic, by Dragana Kaurin ***
At home, the COVID-19 crisis has surfaced another deadly pandemic: in
private spaces women are threatened with both forced mobility and
immobility, as well as physical and sexual violence, digital
surveillance, separation from their children, and withholding of
protective masks and medicine. There has been a significant decrease
in calls, and an increase in traffic on websites for domestic violence
and intimate partner abuse, resulting in a 75% spike in Google
searches seeking help for domestic violence.

*** Tor HackWeek to Take Place Last Week in March ***
The Tor Project is running a Hackweek the last week in March. The idea
is to promote smaller projects that can be wrapped up in 5 days. Check

*** SAFETAG Auditor Roster Registration Form Is Now Open ***
Internews is looking for individuals who are well versed and
comfortable utilizing the SAFETAG framework for organizational
security auditing. This roster will be used for referrals purposes
when organizations are looking for trusted, locally-knowledgeable
expertise to assist them in completing a SAFETAG information security
assessment.

*** Open Tech Fund Reopens Its Internet Freedom Fund ***
The Internet Freedom Fund is OTF's primary way to support projects and
people working on open and accessible technology-focused projects that
promote human rights, Internet freedom, open societies. The
reactivation comes with an improvement of the application process and
operations.

*** Contribute to the Analysis of the VPN Ecosystem ***
The University of Michigan is building the VPNalyzer Project with
support from Consumer Reports Digital Lab, Open Tech Fund and other
organizations to systematically analyze the VPN ecosystem. In the
first phase of our public launch, they are focusing on VPN users. You
can contribute by participating in their 20 minutes survey.

*** Documentary Coded Bias to Premiere on March 22 ***
MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini makes a startling discovery on
racial bias in facial recognition algorithms: machine learning
algorithms are only as unbiased as the humans and historical data
programming them. The Coded Bias documentary follows Joy Buolamwini’s
journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern
against bias in the algorithms that impact us all. It will premiere on
Independent Lens Monday, March 22.
