*** How to Overcome your Zoom Fatigue ***

According to a new study from Stanford researchers published in the journal
Technology, Mind and Behavior, Zoom fatigue is basically what it sounds
like—resulting from the increased strain of maintaining connections at a
distance through video chat—and it leads to burnout, stress, and monotony
on the job. But there are ways you can mitigate the stranglehold video
conferencing might have on your spirits.

*** Dozens of Leading Hong Kong Democrats Charged with Subversion in Major
National Security Crackdown ***

Forty-seven Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigners and activists were charged
last week with conspiracy to commit subversion in the largest single
crackdown on the opposition under a China-imposed national security law.
They were accused of organizing and participating in the unofficial primary
last July aimed at selecting the strongest candidates for a legislative
council election.

*** Iran: Internet Shutdowns Curb Protests and Conceal Human Rights
Violations***

The near total Internet shutdowns began as protests got underway on
Tuesday, 23 February 2021 after reports and videos surfaced indicating that
the Islamic Republic Revolutionary Guards Corps had opened fire with live
ammunition at a group of unarmed civilian fuel porters near the border city
of Saravan in Sistan and Baluchistan province.

*** Internet Shutdowns in 2020, by Access Now ***

The full report, conducted by Berhan Taye, Felicia Anthonio, Alexia Skok,
Sage Cheng, and Donna Wentworth, contextualizes internet shutdown data with
additional research and analysis of important trends, such as crackdowns on
tools for circumventing shutdowns and censorship.

*** Clubhouse Is Scooping Up More Data than You Might Think ***

Clubhouse has a few policies that aren't privacy-friendly. Even worse is
the fact that you have to do a bit of digging to even understand what those
policies actually are. Clubhouse is recording your audio, you can't delete
information other people share about you, you can't just delete your
account, it can share your personal information without notifying you, and
it is tracking you.

*** ‘TALON,’ the US Nationwide Network of AI-Enabled Surveillance Cameras
***

Hundreds of pages of emails show how little-known company Flock has
expanded from surveilling individual neighborhoods into a network of smart
cameras that spans the United States. Through a program called TALON, the
company is allowing police officers to track cars—and by extension,
specific people—outside of their own jurisdictions.

*** Participate in the VPNalyzer Project and Contribute to the Analysis of
the VPN Ecosystem ***

The University of Michigan is building the VPNalyzer Project with support
from Consumer Reports Digital Lab, Open Tech Fund and other organizations
to systematically analyze the VPN ecosystem. In the first phase of our
public launch, they are focusing on VPN users. You can contribute by
participating in their 20 minutes survey.

*** The Munich Center for Machine Learning Is Looking for Partnerships for
the 2021 Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) Initiative ***

The Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML) will partake in the renowned
Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) initiative. The programme will run for
12 weeks from 7 June to 27 August 2021, and will be entirely online due to
COVID-19. DSSGx gives aspiring data scientists the opportunity to refine
their data science skills through intense training, and by working in small
supervised teams on real-world data mining, machine learning, and data
science projects. Currently they are looking for project partners,
non-profits or government organizations with a data science challenge, that
aim to tackle an important problem with high social impact that can be
addressed with data and expertise provided by their partners.

Source Code is Developed and Maintained ***

collaboration with the Open Collective Foundation announced $1.3 million in
grants to 13 research projects to advance the understanding of critical
digital infrastructure across the globe.
