*** NSO Group’s Massive Data Leak ***

NSO Group’s spyware has been used to facilitate human rights
violations around the world on a massive scale, according to a major
investigation into the leak of 50,000 phone numbers of potential
surveillance targets. These include heads of state, activists and
journalists, and many others.

*** Mexico: Pegasus Revelations Prompt Fresh Calls for Truth ***

Reports published by Aristegui Noticias, Proceso, the Washington Post
and the Guardian reveal that more than 50,000 phone numbers were
potential targets of Pegasus; more than 15,000 of these numbers
include the Mexico country code. These 15,000 numbers include those of
human rights defenders, relatives of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa
Rural School who were disappeared and then murdered in 2014,
researchers from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights working
on the Ayotzinapa investigation and more than 25 journalists,
including Cecilio Pineda Brito from Guerrero, who was killed in March
2017, just a few weeks after being targeted by Pegasus, according to
published information.

*** Dating Apps that Track Users From Home To Work and Everywhere In-between ***

Pen Tests Partners were able to precisely locate and track the users
of four major dating apps that are potentially putting 10 million
users at risk. The risk level is elevated for the LGBTQ+ community who
may use these apps in countries with poor human rights where they may
be subject to arrest and persecution.

*** When Kenyan Startups Get Funding, their Founders are Rarely Kenyan ***

Last month, a furor broke out on Kenyan social media when a French
startup founder, who had only spent a few months in the East African
country, seemingly had no trouble raising $1 million in pre-seed
funding for his new food delivery app. Meanwhile, local and regional
founders say they still have difficulty pulling together capital after
years of attempts. To break the cycle of favoritism and white
privilege, Kenya’s tech ecosystem needs to back itself with money and
self-belief.

***  COVID-19 Chinese Archive Platform Archives What Chinese Netizens
Tried to Save During the COVID Outbreak ***

Open Culture Foundation, Wikidata Taiwan and Doublethink Lab launched
“COVID-19 Chinese Archive”, the platform is to archive what Chinese
netizens tried to save when COVID outbreak started to happen back in
December 2019. All systems and data are in English and searchable. We
hope the archive will be a useful tool for anyone who wants to study
what happened in the beginning of the pandemic. Also, we wish those
voices saved by Chinese netizens will still have a window to be heard.

*** Digital Safetea Launched: A Game About Digital Rights for Women
Across Africa ***

Digital Safetea is an interactive fiction game that is trying to
change the way that women across Africa access Digital Security
Training. Play the game as one of three characters to navigate the
benefits and pitfalls of digital platforms. The game is available in 5
languages: English, Luganda, Swahili, French and Pidgin.

*** Government Digital Policies and Children's Rights in Uruguay ***

Uruguay based digital rights organization, JAAKLAC Iniciativa,
recently published research looking at  Uruguay's policies between
2009 and 2019 revealing that the government's early and swift push to
close digital divides in access to digital technologies was not
paralleled by more comprehensive strategies to fulfil minors' rights
to protection and participation. With the aim of mitigating some of
these missing links affecting countries in various regions, JAAKLAC
Iniciativa explores the possibilities of rights-based digital
education practices and of prototypes for more child-centred digital
policy governance.
