*** Call for Proposals: Community Health Village ***
Time to come together around equity, healing and learning! We are
launching a Community Health Village whose theme will be Sustainable
Networks & Movements. Deadline for submissions will be September 9.
Specifically, we are looking for a diversity of proposals that explore
themes related to health and healing through a community lens. This
ranges from mental health to employee wellbeing to restorative
artistic practices.

*** ARTICLE 19 Releases the Global Expression Report 2021 ***
The Global Expression Report 2021 (GxR21), ARTICLE 19’s comprehensive,
data-based report tracking freedom of expression across the world, is
out! Compelling analysis of data in GxR21 shows that two thirds of all
countries imposed restrictions on media in relation to the pandemic.
Unlike any other year in recent history, 2020 drove home just how
vital access to accurate, reliable and timely information is during a
global health crisis. It made it clear that freedom of expression is
the fundamental human right enabling us all to demand the highest
attainable standard of health.

*** Tunisian President Ousts Government in Move Critics Call a Coup ***
Tunisia's president dismissed the government and froze parliament on
Sunday in a dramatic escalation of a political crisis that his
opponents labelled a coup, calling their own supporters to come onto
the streets in protest. This is the biggest challenge yet to the
democratic system Tunisia introduced in a 2011 revolution. Crowds of
people quickly flooded the capital and other cities to support Saied,
cheering and honking car horns in scenes that recalled the revolution,
which triggered the Arab Spring protests.

*** Iran: Bullets, Detention And Shutdowns: The Authorities’ Response
To Protests In Khuzestan ***
The Iranian authorities have once again resorted to unlawful use of
force, including by firing live ammunition and pellet rounds, in
response to protests that started in the southern province of
Khuzestan, Iran on 15 July 2021, killing at least eight protesters and
bystanders and injuring scores of others between 16 and 21 July.

*** Tech Giants Report Absurdly High Profits During the Pandemic ***
Apple, Microsoft and Google owner Alphabet reported on Tuesday
combined profits of more than $50 billion (€59 billion) in the
April-June quarter. The results come amid an increase in consumer
demand as the coronavirus pandemic continues to accelerate a trend
toward working, shopping, socializing and more online. The three
companies currently have a combined market value of $6.4 trillion —
more than double their value by market capitalization when the
pandemic started 16 months ago.

NSO Group Malware Are Now Suing Journalists And Activists ***
Morocco has filed defamation claims against Amnesty International and
a French NGO who claim its intelligence services used the Pegasus
mobile phone spyware against dozens of French journalists.

*** Armenia’s New Digital Disinformation Bills Threaten Free Speech
And Press Freedom ***
In the wake of a recently reignited war with Azerbaijan in 2020,
concerns about the spread of digital disinformation in Armenia have
grown. So much so that a raft of legislation has been proposed by
lawmakers in the Armenian parliament to address the issue. However,
some of the current proposals would severely impact journalists’
ability to cover stories of public interest.

*** Lokman Tsui: How Tech Companies Should Plan For Hong Kong’s
Precarious Future ***
On June 25, an industry association of internet companies, including
Google and Facebook, submitted a letter to the Hong Kong government
stating that they may “refrain from investing and offering their
services in Hong Kong” over a proposed amendment of the Personal Data
(Privacy) Ordinance. After police officers, government officials, and
judges were doxxed in the wake of the 2019 protests, the Hong Kong
government introduced an amendment that means employees of technology
platforms could be jailed if they fail to comply with official
takedown requests.

Exploring Sexuality ***
Women and queer people with disabilities face layers of discrimination
amidst the Brahminical patriarchy, queerphobia and ableism pervasive
in Nepali society. These hinder women and queer people with
disabilities from freely exploring and expressing their
opinions, and accessing information and services around
sexuality.

*** Identities Experiencing the Internet, Nepal Support Report ***
In Nepal, there is a lack of disaggregated data to map out a clear
digital divide based on gender, disability and geographical
location. Nepal stands in 13th place in the list of countries with
the cheapest internet, but the cost is still high for
citizens given the per capita. This report examines internet usage
in Nepal, looking at identities as well.

Internews will be hosting a second Organizational Security Village
from August 30-September 2! This event will bring together security

session proposals are open until August 4.
