*** Recap of Community Debrief Sessions on the Community Health Report **
Taking place over two sessions, a debrief on the 2020 Community Health
Report was organized for community members this week. The following are
questions and answers, as well as extra resources for you to consider.

IN THE WORLD
*** Cuba Darkens Its Internet During Biggest Protests in Decades ***
Videos posted to social media by protesters on Sunday have shown hundreds
of people marching through Havana and elsewhere in anti-government
demonstrations sparked by a worsening economic crisis. Food and medicine
shortages, rising prices and Covid restrictions have seen ordinary Cubans
unable to work in the island nation’s tourism industry and led to lengthy
queues for basic food items.
https://www.codastory.com/authoritarian-tech/legal-tools/cuba-internet-protest/
*** Cuba cuts internet access to gag protesters ***
Cubans are flooding the streets to demand better access to food, water,
medicine, and COVID-19 vaccines, calling for government reforms. But as
they post videos and images using the hashtags #SOSCuba and #PatriaYVida,
the government has responded by blocking access to the internet and popular
communications platforms.
https://www.accessnow.org/patria-y-vida-cuba/
*** The Conversation About Cuba Is Complex: Are You Willing to Have It? ***
Cubans, frustrated with a lack of medical supplies, began a call for help
from the international community as the island is being ravaged by COVID.
Disappointment with the country’s leadership coupled with silence from the
United States in terms of providing any assistance is where the protests
began online. Organizers vehemently asked for people to not politicize the
movement and focus instead on saving lives. But as is always the case, once
the news reached Cuba’s neighbors to the North, the polarization of the
movement began.

*** Jordan’s Government Used Secretly Recorded Clubhouse Audio To Spread
Disinformation ***
In a new report released last week by The Stanford Internet Observatory,
researchers analyzed a Jordanian disinformation network that pushed
pro-monarchy and pro-military narratives on Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok.
The campaign, which Facebook said in a separate report had links to the
Jordanian military, also republished audio that had been secretly recorded
on Clubhouse.

*** Tunisia: Freedom Of Expression Threatened As Authorities Clamp Down On
'insulting' Blog Posts ***
The issue of Tunisian bloggers facing prosecution for their blog posts is
hitting headlines once again, causing fears that individual freedom is
under grave threat in the country, especially freedom of expression. This,
in a country that has been seen as a success story with regards to the
hard-won rights gained through the revolution, in which bloggers played an
integral role.

*** Scuffles Break Out In Georgia's Parliament Over Cameraman's Death
Following Anti-lgbtq Demonstration ***
Protesters were demanding Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili resign
following the death of 37-year-old Alexander Lashkarava. The cameraman was
"found dead at home by his mother" Sunday, six days after he was severely
beaten by demonstrators trying to block an LGBTQ pride event in Georgia's
capital, Tbilisi, his employer, TV Pirveli, reported.
https://edition.cnn.com/2021/07/12/europe/georgia-journalist-killed-parliament-intl/index.html
*** Poland: Independent Media Under Attack Again As PiS Moves Against TVN24
***
The draft bill, which was submitted to Parliament on July 7 by a group of
Law and Justice (PiS) lawmakers, would amend Article 35 of the Broadcasting
Act to bar companies which are majority-owned by entities from outside the
European Economic Area (EEA) from owning more than a more than 49% stake in
Polish media.
https://ipi.media/poland-independent-media-under-attack-again-as-pis-moves-against-tvn24/
*** Botswana police use Israeli Cellebrite tech to search another
journalist’s phone ***
The use of powerful tools provided by private companies to scour seized
devices raises significant concerns over privacy and press freedom. Police
in Botswana use digital forensics equipment to sweep up vast quantities of
journalists’ communications from seized devices, regardless of whether they
are charged with a crime.

*** Government Contractors Have Collected Tons of Our Data in the Pandemic.
What Happens to It Now? ***
Ben Ballard, from Citizen Lab, writes about the pandemic and our
relationship with technology, which has changed a lot since the beginning
of the spread of COVID-19. This is especially true as governments have
tried to collect and analyze data in new ways to combat the ongoing
pandemic. However, the methods and sources that public health officials
have tapped remain opaque. Public health officials and their partners now
stand at a crossroads: embrace transparency and reveal how they are
collecting, analyzing, and distributing data to fight COVID-19 or risk
permanently losing the trust and support of their constituents.
https://slate.com/technology/2021/07/government-data-collection-covid-transparency.html
*** Inside the Industry That Unmasks People at Scale ***
Unique IDs linked to phones are supposed to be anonymous. But there’s an
entire industry that links them to real people and their address.
https://www.vice.com/en/article/epnmvz/industry-unmasks-at-scale-maid-to-pii
*** Why Tech Needs To Focus on The Needs of Marginalized Groups ***
When discussing the impact of technology on marginalized groups, all too
often the focus is on “fixing technology” to address harms against
marginalized groups. This narrative is fundamentally flawed: it is based on
the premise that technology is imposed on marginalized groups by some third
party, at best unaware – at worst indifferent – to how the technology will
affect these groups.

COMMUNITY NEWS
*** Hooking Candiru: Another Mercenary Spyware Vendor Comes into Focus ***
In their latest report, Citizen Lab investigates Candiru, a secretive
Israel-based company that sells spyware exclusively to governments.
Reportedly, their spyware can infect and monitor iPhones, Androids, Macs,
PCs, and cloud accounts.

*** Collaborate with the Internews Journalist Security Fellowship ***
Internews, a global nonprofit working to build healthy media and
information environments where they are most needed, is currently seeking
to better understand the digital security behaviors and perceived online
threats facing journalists in Central and Southeastern Europe. To achieve
this, they are asking members of the Central and Southeastern Europe
journalist community to take the following survey.
The brief survey will be used to inform Internews’ Journalist Security
Fellowship, a part-time program aiming to upskill a cohort of 30
individuals in the region interested in working with journalists and small
media outlets to improve their digital security. Internews ask all
respondents to complete the survey by August 15. Survey findings will be
published on Internews’ website via the blog.

existence that is not easily accessible to everyone, which leads to
excluding some people from their social circles. Read more about this
