*** THE 2020 COMMUNITY HEALTH REPORT IS FINALLY OUT! ***

We are happy to announce the release of the ”2020 Community Health
Report: Building Stronger Communities - The case for mental health
support for digital rights defenders”, the first report of its kind in
the digital rights space. Through a community lens, the report
provides a snapshot of the wellbeing of digital rights and internet
freedom networks around the world. It also offers insight into the
psychosocial challenges and the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has
had on the mental health of those who work to secure digital rights
for all.

*** Attacks Against Media in the Philippines Continue ***

During the past month, Qurium has received brief but frequent denial
attacks against the Philippine alternative media outlets Bulatlat and
Altermidya, as well as the human rights group Karapatan. This forensic
report summarizes Qurium’s findings and has been updated since the
release of the first version to include the new findings.

*** New Investigation Shows Global Human Rights Harm of NSO Group’s Spyware ***

A new interactive online platform by Forensic Architecture, supported
by Amnesty International and the Citizen Lab, maps the global spread
of the notorious spyware Pegasus, made by cyber-surveillance company
NSO Group. “Digital Violence: How the NSO Group Enables State Terror”
documents digital attacks against human rights defenders around the
world, and shows the connections between the ‘digital violence’ of
Pegasus spyware and the real-world harms lawyers, activists, and other
civil society figures face.

*** Government In Slovenia Is Eroding Media Freedom as It Takes Over
EU Presidency ***

This new report concludes that Slovenia, which assumes the rotating
presidency of the EU on July 1, has seen press freedom deteriorate
ever since Janša returned to power in March 2020. Since then, the
ruling SDS party has embarked on a multipronged campaign to reshape
the media landscape in favour of a pro-government narrative, renewing
tactics successful during previous administrations and forging ahead
with new forms of pressure.

*** Digital Rights Defenders Explain Human Rights Threats in Colombia
on Al Jazeera’s The Stream ***

 In this episode of The Stream, digital rights defenders talk about
the protests in Colombia and how the government is responding.
Protesters are still regularly taking to the streets of cities and
towns across Colombia, more than two months after thousands of
demonstrators began calling for widespread economic and social change.
The national strike committee representing unions, human rights groups
and Indigenous movements is for now pausing weekly demonstrations,
while it writes reform proposals that it plans to submit to the next
session of Congress on July 20. A committee leader has warned of a
second national strike and even bigger protests later this year if the
government and lawmakers do not consider their ideas.

*** YouTube Recommends Videos that Violate Their Own Policies ***

In 2019, Mozilla collected countless stories from people whose lives
were impacted by YouTube’s recommendation algorithm. People had been
exposed to misinformation, developed unhealthy body images, and became
trapped in bizarre rabbit holes. The results of the research show that
YouTube is recommending videos that violate their very own content
policies and harm people around the world.

*** China’s Gene Giant Harvests Data from Millions of Women ***

A Chinese gene company selling prenatal tests around the world
developed them in collaboration with the country's military. The
company is using them to collect genetic data from millions of women
for sweeping research on the traits of populations.

*** Kenya: Withdraw Proposed Amendments To Cybercrimes Law ***

On Wednesday 7 July, 2021, six civil society organisations sent an
open letter and memorandum to Garissa Township MP Hon. Aden Duale
expressed deep concern over the proposed amendments to the Computer
Misuse and Cybercrimes Act (CMCA), 2018 through the Computer Misuse
and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

*** Myanmar: UN Must Ensure Accountability for Free Expression Violations ***

Internet shutdowns continue to hamper accountability efforts and
contribute to human rights violations. Article 19 urges the High
Commissioner to examine the Internet restrictions in Myanmar,
including how they have enabled violations of international human
rights law and international criminal law.

*** Stigmatisation and Attacks Against the Press, Human Rights
Defenders, and Organizations In Mexico ***

On July 1, 2021, under the 180th Period of Sessions of the
Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR),  journalist groups,
Mexican civil society organizations, and international organizations
denounced the constant stigmatising narrative used by the federal
government and certain state and municipal governments against those
who exercise their right to defend human rights and to freedom of
expression.
