*** Internet Shutdowns Don’t Help Authoritarians Stop Protests ***
No surprise there. A recent study that looked at the effects of internet
shutdowns amid civil unrest found that internet shutdowns are not
effective at suppressing protest.

*** Coalition of Civil Rights Groups Call for Facebook’s India Policy
Chief to Step Down ***
A coalition of civil rights groups are calling for Ankhi Das, Facebook’s
public policy chief in India, to step down in the face of growing
sectarian conflict in India. The 41 groups sent an open letter
expressing their objections to Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday, citing an
escalating potential for Facebook-fueled violence.

*** Company Profits from Shutdowns in Belarus ***
Private, multinational companies played a direct role in enabling
censorship in Belarus, in the days after the contested election. Experts
who examined the internet traffic in Belarus have previously suggested
that deep packet inspection (DPI) technology was likely used to
implement the shutdowns. Most recently, it was reported that the DPI
equipment was produced by the Canadian company Sandvine, owned by
infamous U.S. private equity firm Francisco Partners, and supplied to
Belarus as part of a $2.5 million contract with the Russian technology
supplier Jet Infosystems.

*** In Hong Kong, Police Crackdown on Protesters Turns Hospitals into
War Zones ***
The Hong Kong police stormed hospitals where protesters are receiving
medical treatment to make arrests, irrespective of the medical state of
their targets.

*** RedesAyuda: Latest Report Analyzes Events that Violate and Restrict
Freedom of Expression in Venezuela ***
“Dictatorship 2.0 in Venezuela 2019” studies and analyzes the events
that violate, restrict and criminalize freedom of expression, in
addition to the deepening control of digital media and the limitations
faced by journalists, activists, and human rights defenders to exercise
their rights to inform and be informed.

*** How Perseverance, Research and Journalism Stopped the Blocking of
Secure Internet in Mexico ***
For five years, Mexico’s largest telecommunications operator (Telmex)
had become a barrier for those accessing a secure internet. A group of
volunteer researchers investigated this block and in 2020, succeeded in
making Telmex release the block.

*** End #CasteInTech and #CasteInTheUS! Support Caste Discrimination
Protections ***

people!

*** The Data Detox Kit Is Now Available in Arabic and Dutch ***
Tactical Tech’s Data Detox Kit is now available in Arabic, thanks to the
network of the Goethe-Institut in the MENA region. Additionally, the
Dutch version of the Data Detox Kit is now online, thanks to Fers. The
Data Detox Kit is available in 22 languages.

*** “Our Data Our Selves” Releases a New Chapter of the Organiser’s
Activity Book ***
The new chapter of the Organiser's Activity Book, from Tactical Tech’s
Data & Activism project, looks at social media data and event promotion.
The activities, aimed at organisers, campaigners and human rights
defenders, explore different ways of promoting events, and their
potential consequences, risks and benefits based on how they may collect
or save personal data.

*** Workplace Surveillance in Times of Corona ****
While the pandemic has had a critical disruptive effect on work and
employment virtually everywhere in the world, it has not affected
everyone in the same ways. The International Labor Organization notes
that the current crisis significantly affects women, workers in
precarious situations who lack access to health care or limited social
security benefits, and informal workers, who work jobs that are not
taxed or registered by the government.

*** Definitely, Matt Mitchell Is Making Things So Much Better ***
Matt Mitchell, founder of CryptoHarlem and Technology Fellow at the Ford
Foundation is featured in this year’s WIRED25, a profile of 25
innovators using tech to make things better for all of us.
