challenges, and the culture of exiled communities, for a new workshop
series we are producing. Please email team at internetfreedomfestival.org

- To facilitate better networking between job seekers and job offerers,

*** Leaked Memo Details How Facebook Ignored Global Political
Manipulation ***

According to a former Facebook data scientist, Facebook’s response to
coordinated political manipulation was not only underwhelming, but
potentially dangerous as elections and political affairs around the
world were impacted.

*** The United Nations Confirms Human Rights Violations by Venezuelan
Dictatorship ***

The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela cited
evidence of unlawful executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary
detentions and torture in the country since 2014. Senior military and
ministerial figures were likely aware of the crimes, said the
investigators, who were appointed by the Human Rights Council in Geneva
in September last year.

*** New Report on the Extent of Website Censorship in Belarus in the
Midst of Protests***

New findings show that more than 70 websites have been blocked in
Belarus in recent weeks, following a controversial presidential election
and amid ongoing anti-government protests. The websites included news
media, political opposition, pro-democracy, election related websites,
as well as communication and circumvention tool sites.

*** Tech Contract in Belarus Canceled, Citing ‘Custom Code’ that Aided
Censorship ***

Sandvine, an internet routing and networking company, said Tuesday it
would stop doing business with Belarus after realizing that the
government was using its products to suppress information during a
bloody crackdown on protesters.

*** EFF’s Pioneer Award Honors the OTF Community***

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has announced the global OTF
Community as recipient of its Pioneer Award, along with other privacy
and digital rights leaders. The Pioneer award honors leaders who are
extending freedom and innovation on the electronic frontier. The virtual
ceremony will be held October 15 from 5:30-7:00pm PT.

***  COVID-19 is Turning Brazil into a Surveillance State ***

Check out this podcast from MIT discussing how Brazil has shifted
towards a more authoritarian path, following President Jair Bolsonaro’s
decree compelling all federal bodies to share the troves of data they
have on citizens, to be consolidate it in a centralized database.

*** Judd Apatow Criticizes Hollywood’s Censorship for Chinese Market ***

Judd Apatow is criticizing Hollywood for allowing itself to be censored
in markets such as China and Saudia Arabia in order to reap financial
rewards. By prioritizing financial gains in markets, Hollywood is not
likely to embrace critical content.

*** What the *, Nintendo? This in-game censorship is * terrible ***

Nintendo is shutting down those conversations with its latest Switch
system update (Sep. 14, 2020) by adding new terms like COVID,
coronavirus and ACAB to its censorship list for usernames, in-game
messages, and search terms for in-game custom designs (but not the
designs themselves).
