*** The Global Expression Report is Out ***

ARTICLE 19’s recently published “Global Expression Report” is the most
comprehensive, data-based report that tracks freedom of expression
across the world. The report reflects not just the rights of
journalists, media, and activists, but how much space there is for all
of us – as individuals and communities to access information and
communicate freely. Sadly, freedom of expression has fallen to its
lowest score since 2009.

Report: https://www.article19.org/gxr2020/

*** Governments are Using the Pandemic to Crack Down on Digital Rights ***

In their fight against the coronavirus, some governments are introducing
digital surveillance and data collection tools that could pose a lasting
threat to citizens' rights, according to a new report by research
institute Freedom House.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/14/world/covid-19-internet-freedom-intl/index.html

*** Facebook Repeatedly Censors Dissents in Vietnam ***

In the last several years, Facebook has repeatedly censored dissent in
Vietnam, trying to placate a repressive government that has threatened
to shut down the platform if it does not comply, The Times found. In
interviews, dozens of Vietnamese activists, human rights advocates and
former Facebook officials say the company has blocked posts by hundreds
of users, often with little explanation

*** For Kenyan Journalists, 2020 is the Worst Year on Record’ ***

According to ARTICLE 19, since the novel coronavirus outbreak in Kenya
in March, the environment has grown much more hostile, with a concerted
effort on the part of the government to silence dissenting voices. More
than 47 cases of arbitrary arrest, assault and harassment have been
perpetrated against bloggers, online activists and human rights
defenders. For female activists and journalists, the situation is
particularly critical.

*** State of Emergency Lifted after Days of Rallies in Thailand ***

Thailand has revoked an emergency decree it imposed a week ago as it
tried to end months of protests against the prime minister and the
monarchy. An official statement said the "violent situation" that had
led to the decree had eased. The measures, which banned gatherings of
more than four people and imposed a curfew, prompted even larger rallies.

*** OTF Global Community Receives the Electronic Frontier Foundation
Pioneer Award ***

With this award, EFF is honoring the entire OTF community for their hard
work and dedication to global Internet freedom and recognizing the need
to protect this community and ensure its survival despite the current
political attacks.

https://youtu.be/nw6EUQ-TAXg

*** US Congressional Members Introduce Bill to Prevent Internet Shutdown ***
Two members of the U.S. Congress have introduced legislation that would
prevent the president from taking action to restrict the U.S. public’s
access to the internet, the Preventing Unwarranted Communications
Shutdowns Act (PUCSA).

https://gizmodo.com/new-bill-aims-to-rein-in-the-presidents-power-to-order-1845455315

*** Media Manipulation Website Launches ***

Media Manipulation is a new resource created by Joan Boston and the team
at Harvard's Technology and Social Change project (TaSC). It is a custom
theory/methods package for detecting, documenting, and debunking media
manipulation and disinformation campaigns.

https://mediamanipulation.org/

*** Security Planner Moved to Consumer Reports ***

The Security Planner, previously at Citizen Lab, has found a new home at
Consumer Reports. The interactive guide provides users with advice on
how to be more secure and safe online, and protect against identity
theft, ransomware, among other things.

https://securityplanner.consumerreports.org/

*** Help Researchers with COVID19 Remote Workplace Research ***

Caroline Sinders, Ellen Pao, and McKensie Mack are conducting a survey
to research and measure the rise of remote workplace harassment and
toxicity that is unfolding during COVID19. The research is focused on
getting a scope of the type of harms taking place on platforms such as
Slack, email etc. Take a few minutes and share your experience!

*** The Widespread Power of U.S. Law Enforcement to Search Mobile Phones ***

A new report by Upturn documents the widespread adoption of mobile
device forensic tools (MDFT) by USA law enforcement, a powerful
technology that allows police to extract a full copy of data from a cell
phone. The report documents more than 2,000 agencies that have purchased
these tools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, representing
a dangerous expansion in law enforcement’s investigatory powers.

*** The New York Times: Activists Turn Facial Recognition Tools Against
the Police ***

Law enforcement has used facial recognition to identify criminals, using
photos from government databases or, through a company called Clearview
AI, from the public internet. But now activists around the world are
turning the process around and developing tools that can unmask law
enforcement in cases of misconduct.
