The 2020 report shows internet freedom has declined for 10 straight
years - contributing to a broader crisis for democracy around the world.

*** Facebook Greatest Source of Covid-19 Disinformation, Journalists Say ***


The majority of journalists covering the pandemic say Facebook is the
biggest spreader of disinformation, outstripping elected officials who
are also a top source, according to an international survey of
journalism and Covid-19.

*** US Joins Six Countries in New Call for Backdoor Encryption Access ***


The US government joins a new call to seek access to encrypted data in
transit and locally stored data like the contents of a phone. The
international statement also calls for an industry-wide effort to enable
law enforcement agencies to access encrypted data once a warrant has
been obtained.

*** Nigeria May Shut Down Internet as #EndSARS Protests Continue ***


With Nigerians not backing down on protests for the reform of the police
force and total disbandment of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad(SARS),
there are speculations that the government might shut down the internet.

*** Report on OceanLotus Attacks on Vietnamese Dissidents in Germany Now
Available in English ***


A group of Vietnamese hackers has been systematically spying on
dissidents for years, including in Germany. “Lined up in the sights of
Vietnamese hackers” is an investigation by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR
Recherche / BR Data) and Zeit Online.

*** Open Call for the Exposing the Invisible Investigative Institute ***


Join Exposing the Invisible for a three-week online workshop in
November-December 2020 or January-February 2021 to share skills and
techniques for secure investigations and digital research methods across
the European Union. They are looking for investigative journalists,
citizen investigators, activists or members of an NGO/group conducting
investigations, based in EU member states. The deadline for applications
is 1st November.

*** Participate in the “Forging a Path for a Better Information
Ecosystem”, a Consultation Dedicated to Disinformation ***


The UNDP and UNESCO are hosting a public consultation on disinformation.
Combating disinformation is becoming an ever more urgent concern for
those working to build informed and inclusive societies. This three-week
exercise will result in sharpened understanding and interventions by
each UN organisation, leading to stronger policy support, programming
and partnerships.

*** Icarus Project: An Online Repository for Documented Internet
Censorship Circumvention Techniques and Methods ***


Icarus Project is a technical research laboratory dedicated for testing,
analyzing, documenting, and developing Internet censorship circumvention
solutions. The team is aiming to collect as many techniques as possible
and document them in forms of technical analysis, and step-by-step
implementation guides.

*** “Personal Data: Political Persuasion” Is Now Available in Khmer ***


Tactical Tech’s guidebook ‘Personal Data: Political Persuasion’ is now
available in Khmer. The translation was launched with a workshop on 2nd
October by Open Development Cambodia in Phnom Penh, featuring a keynote
speech by Dr. Amber Macintyre of our Data & Politics project.

*** "Mediating Sexualities” Conference Program is Live ***


Mediating Sexualities will bring together about thirty researchers
working from five different countries, this conference aims to answer
questions such as how are “pornography” and “hate” regulated on social
media, or how has #MeToo movement changed the journalistic coverage of
sexuality and the gender dynamics inside press newsrooms. Access to the
pre-recorded presentations and participation in the live discussions is
free of charge.
