*** Singapore's World-First Face Scan Plan Sparks Privacy Fears ***

Singapore will become the world's first country to use facial 
verification in its national ID scheme. From next year, millions of 
people living in the city-state will be able to access government 
agencies, banking services and other amenities with a quick face scan. 
Privacy advocates are alarmed by what they say is an intrusive system 
vulnerable to abuse.

*** Tanzania Blocks Social Media and Tor on Election Day ***

Tanzania blocked access to Tor, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and 
Telegram on election day. This after the state had previously issued a 
directive restricting text messaging within the country. This also 
builds on earlier legislation outlawing international press from 
covering developments in the country without local media partnerships.

*** Young Nigerians are Harnessing Social Media Against Police Abuse ***

Thousands of young people across Nigeria and abroad this month took to 
the streets to call for the dissolution of Special Anti-Robbery Squad 
(SARS), an infamous police unit accused of extortion, extrajudicial 
killings, rape and torture These young activists are using online 
platforms to raise awareness and coordinate protests, as well as connect 
with volunteers and spread their message globally.

*** Surveillance Company Harassed Female Employees Using its own Facial 
Recognition Technology ***


A surveillance startup in Silicon Valley, Verkada, is being accused of 
sexism and discrimination after a sales director used the company’s 
facial recognition system to harass female workers. Last year, the sales 
director accessed these cameras to take photos of female workers, then 
posted them in a Slack channel called #RawVerkadawgz alongside sexually 
explicit jokes.

*** LAPD Gets Approval to Begin Recording, Storing Aerial Footage of 
Protests ***

The Los Angeles Police Department received approval Tuesday to begin 
recording and storing aerial footage of protests and other large 
gatherings from its helicopters — a new capability that the department 
said would expand its “operational readiness” and protesters and civil 
liberties advocates denounced as unconstitutional government 
surveillance.

*** A Toolkit for Outsmarting AI-Powered Censorship ***

The Future of Memory is a browser-based game and tool that has just been 
released by the Mozilla Foundation. It teaches internet users how to 
outsmart censors and build “machine resistant” communications. In the 
choose-your-own-adventure game, users play as a moderation engineer at a 
fictional tech company tasked with censoring content. Along the way, 
users work in content moderation and make decisions about automation.

*** What Happened When Humans Stopped Managing Social Media Content ***

During the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Facebook, Twitter and Google 
all used automation instead of people to scrub harmful content from 
their platforms. Politico explores what happened. Spoiler alert, humans 
are still very much needed.

*** Celebrations as Chile Votes by Huge Majority to Scrap Pinochet-Era 
Constitution ***

Chile has voted overwhelmingly in favor of rewriting the country’s 
constitution to replace guiding principles imposed four decades ago 
under the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. Jubilant 
pro-reform supporters took to the streets of the capital Santiago and 
other cities to celebrate on Sunday night after exit polls showed that 
78.24% of people had voted to approve a rewrite, while 21.76% rejected 
the change.

2020. Mozilla welcomes sessions on a wide range of topics relevant to 
trustworthy AI and the internet health movement, but all sessions must
