Dear friends,
This newsletter is a service for internet freedom defenders around the
world! Send us interesting updates, open positions, events, and
resources and we will share them in our next newsletter. Contact us at
team at internetfreedomfestival.org.
Here are our updates for the week of July 8-12:
*** Public Pressures Zoom to Fix Vulnerability ***
This week, a security researcher discovered a vulnerability in Zoom’s
mac client which allowed malicious entities to hijack a user’s webcam.
Zoom initially did nothing about it, saying the vulnerabilities were
“low risk.” A day later, after users protested, they reversed their
course, and issued a patch that solved the security flaw. If you are a
Zoom user, make sure to update to the most recent version.

*** Governments are Using Tech to Target Migrants ***
Governments are using migrants as a testing ground for many of their
so-called “innovations” including biometric schemes, invasive mobile
phone extraction procedures, and more. Migrants are now expected to hand
over their devices, their social media passwords, and even their DNA.

*** Turkish Think Tank Escalates Harassment of Journalists ***
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and 20 other human rights and freedom of
expression organisations condemn a Turkish pro-government think tank’s
report that accuses leading international media of being biased against
the government and singles out their correspondents for attack. The
organisations regard the report as a dangerous escalation in the
harassment of journalists.
