Dear friends,
This newsletter is a service for internet freedom defenders around the
world! Send us interesting updates, open positions, events, and
resources and we will share them in our next newsletter. Contact us at
team at internetfreedomfestival.org.
Here are our updates for the week of July 1-5:
*** Solidarity Call-to-Action: Myanmar ***
Myanmar is still experiencing Internet blackouts in various locations
throughout the country. UN Investigator Yanghee Lee is reporting that
possible new war crimes are taking place in Rakhine and Chin states amid
the communications blackout.
Stand in solidarity and demand that the Internet blackout is ended. To
help, follow hashtags #StopInternetShutdownMM #keepiton, and post to
social media at 5:00pm MMT / +6.30 UTC every day until the government
restores the Internet.

*** Chinese Border Guards put Secret Surveillance App on Tourists'
Phones ***
Chinese border police are secretly installing surveillance apps on the
phones of visitors and downloading personal information as part of the
government’s intensive scrutiny of the remote Xinjiang region.

*** Digital Freedom Groups Caution UK on Content Regulation ***
The Open Technology Institute and Electronic Frontier Foundation want
the UK to clarify just how they are going to regulate online content,
concerned a proposal to do so is too broad and not sufficiently clear.

*** Calling all Artists! ***
Thoughtworks Arts has an open call for their residency. They are
seeking folks to investigate alternative routes to monopolistic AI
practices that effectively lock out and disempower others. Apply before
July 31st.

*** Second Round of Whistleblowing Fund Open***
The Digital Whistleblowing Fund is now open for new applications from
European projects reporting on gender based violence, the rights of
minorities, migrants and refugees. The fund enables investigative
journalism groups and human rights grassroots organizations to receive
support in starting a secure digital whistleblowing initiative.
