### News and Updates ###
*** Amazon is helping Governments track people in real time through
facial recognition ***
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) watchdog group on Tuesday sent
Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos a letter calling on his company to
stop selling facial-recognition software to government entities like the
Portland-area county, which has used the cloud-computing service to
compare images of people in public places to its database of criminal
suspects. ACLU urges, “People should be free to walk down the street
without being watched by the government”.

*** Who controls the internet? ***
The Internet belongs to us all. It is distributed across a decentralized
network of computers that no single authority can own. That’s the dream.
The reality is different. How do we rebalance the power between the
biggest Internet companies and the billions of us who use their services
every day? Can we distribute more control of Web technologies, using
peer-to-peer, blockchain and new organizing principles for social media?

*** Visa applications and data collection ***
Applying for a visa is the stage of travel when we have to relinquish
the most data about ourselves, and yet it is also the point at which we
have the least control over that data and how it is used. Invasive
techniques are commonly justified under the pretext of “security,”
“counter-terrorism,” or to counter “fraud.” This article looks at the
data that's collected when we apply for a visa, and its possible
implications.
