Don’t forget: Our News and Updates section is driven by you! Be sure to
include us in your rounds of announcements and campaign updates

*** 2018 IFF Fellows Announced ***

We’re proud to announce the 2018 IFF Fellows! This diverse cohort of 20
professionals & community leaders from 17 different countries will work
together to review and select sessions for the 2018 festival program. We
were thrilled at the response, reviewing several hundred applications
that cut across many different boundaries, many of which came from
communities that are not well established within ours. We hope you’ll
join us in congratulating this amazing set of fellows and wish them luck
for the work they have ahead of them leading into the next festival!

*** #FreeRightsDefenders : The Case of the Instanbul 10 imprisoned in
Turkey ***

“Under the post-coup attempt crackdown, there has been a huge number of
assaults on civil society, critical journalists and the political
opposition. But this is a direct attack on the backbone of human
rights....If this goes on, it is no exaggeration to say that civil
society as we know it — as something that can be critical of the
authorities, can hold people to account, is visible — won’t exist.”

Keep up to date on developments with the Instanbul 10 through the
hashtag #FreeRightsDefenders as the community continues to ask for the
release of our colleagues and friends, along with the hundreds of others
currently being held under emergency powers in Turkey.

*** Action on Venezuela ***

#SilencedByForce: “So far, 92 people have been killed, over 1519 have
been injured, hundreds were detained, and countless other have suffered
the threat of violence. We expect these numbers to rise in the coming
weeks and we need the voice of the movement to condemn the illegal use
of violence and force.”

Venezuelan Plebiscite: “After 100 days of consecutive citizen protests,
the Venezuelan opposition and civil society groups called for a
plebiscite challenging the People’s Constitutyente proposed by
Presidente Maduro. 7,186,170 people voted inside and outside of the
country.” Read the article Eli Rivera, DIFF Fellow 2017 wrote on Global
Voices en español

*** IranSec Report on Details of Phishing Attacks Human Rights Activists
and Journalists***

“In all three attacks, victims were redirected to a page with an address
very similar to addresses used by Google with content resembling a
Google login page. Each page was specifically designed for each victim
complete with their own avatar and name. In some cases, duration between
creation of the fraudulent domain and its use in the phishing scam was
very short, apparently in an attempt to decrease risk of detection by
Google or third party security experts.”

*** Unleashing the Trolls Against Critics ***

“The story is increasingly a familiar one: a journalist or activist
speaks out against the status quo, and is confronted with a barrage of
abusive and violent remarks online. Public figures, representing the
status quo under threat, encourage or endorse the abuse, either through
action or inaction. The target of the attack is intimidated into
silence. The status quo holds strong.”

*** New Initiative for Digital Safety/Org Sec Trainers Launching Soon ***

IREX is launching an initiative to support digital safety trainers
working in organizational security. The initiative includes a granting
mechanism as well as travel support to global and regional summits for
exchanging knowledge and best practices. Selected trainers will
participate in a kick off Trainers’ Summit planned for November 2017.
This initiative is open to both individuals and organizations. Be on the
lookout for more information in the next IFF newsletter!
