Dear Friends,

Just a friendly reminder that the IFF’s Code of Conduct also applies to
any interaction on our virtual channels. We want to ensure that the safe
spaces we create at the festival also carry over to our online
platforms. If you haven't checked it out, please do! And feel free to
ping us should you have any questions.

And now, here are your updates for the week of July 24 - 28:

### News and Updates ###

Our News and Updates section is driven by you! Be sure to include us in
your rounds of announcements and campaign updates!

*** Action on the #Istanbul10 #FreeRightsDefenders in Turkey ***

“A court in Turkey has just imprisoned Amnesty Turkey’s Director İdil
Eser and five other human rights defenders. But now we have a chance to
make Turkey listen. On 25 July, Federica Mogherini the EU’s High
Representative for Foreign Affairs, is meeting Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu,
Turkey’s Foreign Minister, in Brussels. In this meeting, she must speak
out for the brave people being locked up and persecuted simply for
standing up for what’s right.”

“Avaaz staff member Özlem! Let's set her free. Özlem's being held
without charges after attending a meeting of human rights defenders. To
the Turkish government, she's just one person caught up in a crackdown
on civil society. But if we build a massive international petition and
use the media to make Özlem famous, she'll be more trouble than she's
worth for a government in political crisis”

*** The IFF Team is growing! ***

Lu Ortiz has joined our team as Diversity Manager! We’re thrilled to
have her on board to help guide the IFF in its mission to be as diverse
and inclusive as possible. Lu will be working on our existing efforts,
like the Diversity and Inclusion Fund, as well as developing new
initiatives to help bring new voices into our community and help them
thrive.

Our Community Leadership has been launched! It is made up of individuals
who will be working very closely with the IFF team on enhancing specific
areas. Included in this group are:

+ The Glitterati Executive Board, made up of Nathalie Espitia Diaz, of
Nois Radio, and Shawna Finnegan, of APC, who will focus on infusing the
IFF with “soul and magick” through the various social gatherings,
creating a daily podcast, and ensuring that glitter is never missing!

+ Paul Furley, who has joined the IFF as our "Tech Wizard" will be
helping with all things technical, including organizing technologist
meetups during the festival.

### Community Stories ###

This week’s community story is from Chinmayi S K, founder of the
Bachchao Project and Global Coordinator for Random Hacks of Kindness,
discussing the need for community gatherings in the Global South to help
ensure equitable adoption of the Internet

“Every day we read stories of how the introduction of certain
technologies or technology processes are leading to exclusion or to our
loss of individual rights. Often the excluded groups or individuals are
unable to articulate their needs or even the issues they face. Some of
this is a result of systematic bias, while the rest is due to unequal
access and the methodologies used in internet adoption. Internet is
still in its teens and while it is a useful medium human society, it
needs time and a proper understanding to be completely adopted by
humanity as a life tool.”
