Dear friends,
Our thoughts this week are with our colleagues detained in Turkey as
well as those facing an increasingly deteriorating situation in
Venezuela. In the work we do, just remember: You are not alone, we are
all in this together.
Here are the updates for July 10 - 14:
### News and Updates ###
*** Demands for the Release of Security Trainers Held in Turkey ***
Activists in more than 30 countries will join protests outside Turkish
embassies today demanding the release of Amnesty International Turkey’s
Chair and Director as well as other prominent human rights defenders
behind bars amid a spiralling crackdown. We encourage you to follow
@amnesty (Amnesty International) and @Article19org (Article 19) and
support them on social media and follow @frontlinehrd for updates.
"We demand the release of @amnesty Turkey Director & her colleagues now!

*** Joint Statement on Internet Censorship in Venezuela ***
“The deepening of the social and political crisis is leading to the
creation of a state of censorship, control and surveillance that
seriously affects the exercise of human rights. Free, fair and quality
internet access has been recognized internationally as a necessary
condition for the exercise of freedom of expression, as is the ability
to communicate and access information as a precondition for the
existence of a democratic society. In this sense, the undersigned
organizations, members of civil society and academia in the region, set
our position…”

*** Mexican NSO Group Malware Surveillance Scandal Widens ***
A report by Citizen Lab in cooperation with R3D, SocialTic, and
Article19 confirms that an international group of experts assembled by
the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to investigate the
Ayotzinapa massacre of 43 university students was targeted with
infection by NSO group malware. The Mexican government’s inadequate
response and possible complicity in the massacre led to the independent
international investigation. The malware targeting occurred shortly
after the investigation was disavowed by Mexican government attorneys.

the commercial spyware:

*** Institute for War and Peace Reporting Survey ***
“We chose to use the word “champion” to describe the person that many of
us have trained or been, the office “techie,” the “printer fixer,” the
person who has most likely never has been formally trained but has
taught themselves on the job or at home. Inevitably, this person often
becomes the informal information security and privacy manager. We aim to
build a community curriculum that helps build their skills to better
manage information security and privacy in this common scenario – and
provide a baseline for future learning.”
The questionnaire should not take longer than 10 minutes to complete, it
is entirely confidential and is for the eyes of the project consultants
only. Only disaggregated and anonymised information will be used to
helping us build a better curriculum.

We are under a chronic and severe surveillance, activism is
criminalized, our digital commons are privatized and violence online is
normalized. To build autonomous and resilient networks is, more than
ever, vital and necessary. While the price of dissent goes up,
autonomous digital infrastructure provides relief to activists,
kournalists, collectives, social organisations, free/libre and
independent media. Kéfir is a feminist libre tech co-op that provides
autonomous digital infrastructure to social movements in Latin America.
Their network needs a new server and they've launched a fundraising effort!
