Hi colleagues (Thanks Dirk for building this space)
//introducing yourself on the list
Hi, I'm Heather. It has been a pleasure to connect and reconnect with you.
At the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent (IFRC) based in
Geneva, I lead Data Literacy Programs. This includes activities and
projects related to data protection, responsible data and data sharing
(sometimes open data). I'm building/collating internal content and
curriculum for various humanitarian areas (eg. WASH, Health, M & E, Youth
and Gender) plus running workshops, webinars and training. My path
(professional and volunteer) been connecting peopel to maps, data and code
via various technology companies, small NGOs, startups, research institutes
and now a large INGO.
A few weeks ago I bought a bike and am super happy to live in a place that
I can cycle, breath, marvel at nature and be me.
//giving any amount of detail on the network-centric resource you are
working on
The tools and content I am creating a Data Playbook for IFRC. This is a
co-created corpus of content from the Secretariat and 190 National
Societies around the world. We don't aim to recreate data science manuals
or existing excellent work on Responsible Data or Data Protection. There is
a lot of talent and resources tailored for our work and policies. It is an
exercise in connecting to champions and building organizational confidence.
Since the audience is internal, it is still unclear if we will share it all
publicly. Our M & E guides are public so that is my goal : )
//what are the big challenges you are facing in doing so
We are a large humanitarian organization that gets project based funding. I
don't have much of a budget but the Federation has always been about
volunteering to achieve goals. The IT infrastructures are antiquated. We
have heart and the internet. Honestly, I am relieved (so far) to not focus
on too shiny, but focus on engagement and needs.
