[liberationtech] [TrumanScholars] funds for transporting refugees from border to Germany

I don't think it is skin color that determines who gets empathy and who does not.

I think a better explanatory variable is *state interest*.

When rival states (Russia, China, Iran, etc.) kill people, there is great moral outrage. The media leads us in collective expression of outrage.

When friendly states (US, Colombia, Israel, Saudi Arabia (in Yemen)) kill people, there is little outrage. The media downplays it or excuses it. Citizens may protest, but those protests remain invisible and unreported.

Remember the US invasion of Iraq? The media led us in a joyful celebration of the accuracy of our ordinance (right down the smokestack of the Iraqi Ministry of Telecommunications! Wow!)

I don't think racism is the issue. State interest is the issue.

Hans

".. the N word .."

Dear Kenoli,

which N-word can you not write or speak? I grew up in Germany, my socialization started with Kant, Marx, Engels, Einstein, C.G.Jung, Fromm and others. But even in Germany there is no such thing or I myself never experienced this.

What happens with you in the USA that you have such thinking and speaking barriers.

with kind regards, willi

> Yes this is a great question. Russia similarly invaded Afghanistan and parts of Syria. We invaded Iraq and Grenada. Several groups tried to exterminate the Kurds and other groups in that region. And more. No one freaked out about the suffering of people in these countries and even drove refugees from there out of Europe and the United States. These facts in the face of the way people are getting disturbed about Ukraine (I am also disturbed about Udraine but was similar disturbed about these other situations) and not about the suffering in these other countries is hugely concerning and speaks pretty directly to racist attitudes in Europe and the US.
