Dear friends,
We are pleased today to announce the public beta launch of Umbrella App on
Android. I’m sure a lot of you on LibTech already know about it already,
but for those who don’t, Umbrella App aims to put digital and physical
security advice in your pocket.
Lessons give you simple, practical advice on what to do and what tools to
do it with – covering everything from sending a secure email to conducting
physical counter-surveillance. You can choose your level of ability or type
of protection needed and get answers that reflect your needs. Users can
mark, customise and share simple checklists for quick reminders. It also
has a series of security information feeds from places like the UN and
Centers for Disease Control to keep you updated on the move.
We particularly hope that it will be a useful tool for those in the
community who are trainers and want a simple tool for participants to be
able to quickly reference - along with individual activists, journalists
and aid workers looking at an element of security for the first time.
We just wanted to thank a number of people and groups on LibTech for their
work and support, especially:
-Tactical Tech/Frontline Defenders for Security in A Box, EFF for
Surveillance Self Defence, which was extremely helpful when building our
digital security content
-Amnesty International, Rory Peck Trust and the European Inter-Agency
Security Forum for helping us with testing
-iSEC Partners – for code auditing us (which we will be publishing fully by
the end of the week)
-Open Tech Fund – for being a great donor and letting us get on with making
things
-All the groups who make all the various open source tools that we have
included
-The many people in the community who welcomed us, and provided us with
fantastic feedback, testing and advice
We owe you all a beer J
