I have been using it myself, and it's not bad.
I'd go as far as to say it is as secure as TAILS (possibly more so in
some ways).

Although this is all assuming the host computer is completely clean.
Whonix does allow for more flexibility than TAILS, I've found in
configuring HiddenServices especially.
The Physical Isolation feature (using crossover cable) allows for
further isolation between the system running Tor and the workstation.

As mentioned before, although "alpha" the design is not "alpha". The
idea of having two virtual machines, one running Tor and the other
being the one where the action happens isn't new.
