It is, in fact, anecdotal evidence.  We may see a sudden and massive
complete technology shift back ten years to where no one carries a
smartphone.

This is profoundly improbable, to a degree where I am willing to
discard it out of hand, in part because smartphones have in very real
ways changed our cities and the way we live in them.  I can see a
world where we demand very different privacy and security guarantees
from our phones -- I hope we're living in it.  I cannot see a world
where we just turn them all off forever.
