We have a guide that is a bit out of date, and I am working on an
update. In the meantime, here are a few ways to enhance Julian's
recommendation to start with CyanogenMod, all developed by an amazingly
talented volunteer of ours:

1) Guardian Project Installer - this is a firmware image you flash on
top of Cyanogen that includes a default set of open-source
security-focused apps:

2) SecDroid - a root-required app (for ANY device with root, not just
cyanogen) that disables many unnecessary and potentially risky
services/apps in the default configuration of Android:

3) (WARNING: Currently in "unaudited" beta, but still worthwhile to
mention): Guardian ROM: a completely open-source firmware for Android,
based on Cyanogen, that includes everything that #1 and #2 above have,

Again, we should have some updated tutorials on this coming soon.
