https://supporters.eff.org/civicrm/event/info?id=17&reset=1> with
Saudi blogger Ahmed Al Omran (saudijeans.org) at the CBS Interactive
(CNET) space. The event will be a talk/interactive Q&A. Official
description below:
Have you ever wondered why Saudi Arabia avoided the winds of change
while the surrounding region was swept into upheaval during the Arab
Spring? Join EFF and Saudi blogger Ahmed Al Omran for an insider’s look
at this Middle Eastern country and a discussion about blogging,
government censorship, and politics at our upcoming Geek Reading on
Thursday, April 5. Best known for his widely read and longstanding blog,
Saudi Jeans, Omran is a multimedia journalist working as a production
assistant on the social media desk at NPR.
Spotlighting everything from student protests to the ongoing plight of a
writer facing death threats for blasphemous Tweets, Saudi Jeans offers a
rare glimpse inside Saudi Arabia with daily snapshots of a fascinating
moment in history. Omran will discuss what it is like to contend with
government censorship in a country where bloggers are few and far
between, and his talk will shed light on the state of online discourse
in Saudi Arabia.
EFF Geek Readings bring Internet users, bloggers, free speech advocates,
and other interested folks together to hear from prominent writers and
thinkers, meet like-minded community members, and exchange ideas.
