Don't know if somebody knows it, but [1] is a replacement of namecoin
project, born after some high-risk design vulnerability has come up,
which uses BitCoin block chain.
For the main topic, from the homepage of OpenNIC:
"OpenNIC is owned and operated by the OpenNIC community".
Using it as root DNS, you are fully trusting them. What if they will be
evil in the future?
