The Citizen Lab is an interdisciplinary laboratory based at the Munk
School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, focusing on
advanced research and development at the intersection of digital media,
global security, and human rights. Our mission is to undertake advanced
research and engage in development that monitors, analyses, and impacts
the exercise of political power in cyberspace.

The Citizen Lab currently has a full-time opening for a technical
researcher to be based at the University of Toronto. The incumbent will
provide technical and analytical support for research projects on
Internet censorship, surveillance, cyber security and attacks (e.g.
denial-of-service attacks, malware, etc), and related topics. Key
responsibilities include: providing technical and analytical support for
range of research projects; contributing to ongoing collaborative and
independent research with the goal of publication; maintaining an
existing code base and developing new features for software tools used
for monitoring Internet censorship; maintaining reporting, project
management platforms, and documentation for software development
projects; participating in technical workshops and engagements with
partners and collaborators; undertaking special research projects as
assigned by the Citizen Lab Director.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

*University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field,
or equivalent combination of education and experience.
*Minimum 5 years of related experience
*Advanced programming skills across a number of languages
*Required: Java, as well as Python or another scripting language
*Required: Experience with a full web application development stack
*Experience with J2EE and/or Django
*Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP and networking
*Strong debugging, bug-tracking, code review, documentation experience
*Excellent project management skills
*Superior problem solving and analytical ability
*Excellent written and oral communication skills
*Demonstrated ability to provide mentorship and communicate complex
research methods and technical issues to individuals from range of
research and technical backgrounds
*Interest in freedom of expression, Internet censorship, computer
security, and related areas.

ADDITIONAL ASSETS

*Previous experience in industry or academic research environment on
related topics
*Knowledge of Internet censorship, surveillance, computer security, and
related areas
*Practical experience with data analysis and visualization applications
