This is actually a very interesting phenomenon that I have noticed
myself (we test our Android OTR app Gibberbot on Facebook quite a bit).

In short, Facebook has code that is actively detecting the OTR protocol
signature, and permanently flagging that a message in a user's Facebook
inbox is encrypted.

Facebook could probably easily generate a list of anyone who has every
used an encrypted chat application on their system.
