Black and Cuba is a  full-length documentary that takes audiences along the life-changing journey I began at Yale while I was studying for a PhD in African American studies with an extraordinary and diverse group of friends: Besenia, Dalton, Erin, Josh, Myra, Theresa, Tokunbo and Tucker.  We all felt like misfits at this elite institution.  We travelled to Cuba to see how revolution is lived.  There we dialogued with Cubans from all walks of life and gained insight about how we will overcome racism and class.  The film also uses rarely seen moving images from the African diaspora's digital archive to take viewers on a trip through the international history of Black resistance.  It  features Fidel Castro, Angela Davis, Ché Guevara, Julius Nyerere, Assata Shakur and Robert F. Williams.  This documentary is an inspirational and exhilarating experience that fulfills our desire to see more of the diversity, intelligence and compassion within Black communities illuminated in film.  You can see some excerpts of our work here. As a professor and former community organizer, I crafted this work to stimulate conversations in college classrooms and community-based organizations.
