Very thoughtful.

This line stood out to me:

"an activist needs a private and secure platform to organize with a small
group of people.  These are the people who lay the groundwork for what the
movement is to become. "

So why not focus on this first? It seems to me that the concept of "group"
where people have convenience of being able to communicate in an automated
way with a pre-selected group is by it's very nature a risk - whether it be
centralized or decentralized.

So, why not figure out the feature set for Mailman that you use here to
make it less risky? (or look at the gpl http://groupserver.org tool that we
use for democracy building is safer places) It isn't decentralized in that
a central site has a list of e-mail addresses but perhaps you could combine
it with a desktop app mail like program with built in security and messages
that expire.

People are using perceived obscurity right now, why not help make them more
obscure incrementally?

I can certainly see value in the "now broadcast and mass organize" hoot
suite like tool, but perhaps integration is exactly what you don't want for
security.
