[liberationtech] CFP: 28c3 Mesh Network Get-together

Hi Moritz/all,

I'm tempted by the Mesh workshop. Would the following work be of
interest to the CCC community -- and the liberationtech community? For
the past six weeks I've been researching (& have started to build as an
open source project) applications & system support for ferrying data
around a crowd over WiFi via mobile phones. Some of the phones act as
APs. Other, more powerful devices can participate.

It's designed for:

(1) loss of 3G -- using WiFi but without Ad Hoc mode, which Android
doesn't currently support directly.
(2) more playful applications for crowds.

I'm a systems developer/researcher originally but now I'm more
interested in how ordinary people can set up, participate in and
maintain technology such as a network more or less spontaneously,
despite the rigours of crowd scenarios. Security is not a major
consideration (although there is some via WAP authentication). Arguably,
it's not suitable for protests, therefore.

I'm happy to discuss further with anyone interested. I'm putting
together a technical report here at ITU Copenhagen where I'm a visiting
researcher (back to Bristol UK on Monday, and my day-job as a creative
technologist).

Best,

Tim
