The Center for Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, a center within the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, seeks an experienced Program Coordinator to work with faculty investigators to develop and manage the Program on Liberation Technology. The rapidly growing field of “Liberation Technology,” is the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance and deepen democracy, political accountability, human rights, the rule of law, and economic development. The individual will be working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and must have a clear understanding of all aspects of program research, funding, deliverables, and sponsor requirements.
Program Coordination and Development (75%)
• Evaluate and provide expertise in the development of the growing field of “Liberation Technology”.
• Manage public communications of the Liberation Technology program, including the website, blog, email listserve, and other announcements on and off campus; write and solicit content for the website; ensure information on website is current, accurate and professional.
• Research, identify and select speakers for the weekly LibTech seminar series and other related conferences; sole contact with speakers and will coordinate with events coordinator on speaker travel, arrival, and interaction of visitors with faculty and fellows at CCRL and FSI.
• Write and edit summaries of seminar presentations and conference discussions for posting on website and blog; manage the meeting schedule and material preparation.
• Conduct outreach to relevant corporate and non-profit actors in the field, particularly philanthropic foundations and corporations specializing in information and communication technology and new social media. Recruit and hire undergraduate student research and program assistants and supervise their work.
• Serve as Directors’ liaison and will utilize sound judgment and great discretion in working with multiple researchers and a variety of agencies; individual will attend meetings on behalf of program and program directors and must have intimate knowledge of research to be able to appropriately represent the program.
• Coordinate internally with CDDRL staff and with academic and administrative staff in other relevant Stanford centers and departments; interface with director with respect to meeting and appointment scheduling, and with other projects as requested.
Research and Research Support (25%)
• Gather and summarize current academic research on Liberation Technology; survey, summarize and assess news accounts and blogposts of how ICT is being used to advance democracy and development.
• Interview Liberation Technology practitioners and write synopsis for publish on CDDRL website and blog.
• Contributes to the research, development and writing of research proposals, annual reports and scientific papers and journals for publication; responsible for knowing technical reporting requirements.
• Support the research, writing, and speaking of the Director on Liberation Technology, including preparation of presentations.
• Interview Liberation Technology practitioners and write synopsis for publish on CDDRL website and blog.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have excellent research, writing, and administrative skills, substantial knowledge of how information and communication technology is being used to advance democracy and development, and academic training in a relevant field, such as social science, computer science/engineering, or law. He or she must have the ability to carry out a wide range of assignments with minimum instruction. Excellent communication skills are also a must, both written and orally, with an ability to interact comfortably with high-profile individuals. Prior work in or research on the application of information and communication technology for advancing democracy and development is highly desired. Experience with the Stanford University campus is also a plus.
