(And hi, Firoze!).

I've met Firoze on a couple of occasions, and been in touch a few times over
the past couple of years.

Without doubt I think there would be great value in engaging him in this
work. I'm not due back at Stanford until (most likely) mid-October so will
leave it to you to decide how to best proceed with this. I'm assuming at
some stage it will be worth identifying a number of key individuals in this
space, and then discussing the merits of approaching them, and then
officially invited them to engage?

Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

At a conference this week at the Tides Foundation, I had the
opportunity to meet an exceptional man named Firoze Manji, who manages
a newsletter and information exchange for African activists, called
the Pambazuka News:

"Fahamu publishes the prize-winning weekly electronic news and
information forum for social justice in Africa, Pambazuka News. It is
produced by a pan-African community of some 1,000 citizens and
organisations - academics, policy makers, social activists, women's
organisations, civil society organisations, writers, artists, poets,
bloggers, and commentators."

Firoze has written a number of books on activism and Africa (see

He is an avid seeker of new information technologies, and would like
to explore ways to use them to expand the impact of their work.  He
might be able to host projects, internships for students, and other
activities. He is in the Bay Area occasionally (he is based on
London), but until that may work out, he would be eager to get some of
us to do a critique with him of the tools they have been using and the
possibilities for new technologies.

I'm sending this letter primarily as a means of introduction (feel
free to contact him directly if you'd like) and to get it into our
thinking as we move into the Fall. Unfortunately I'll be away again
next week so won't be able to attend the meeting.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on how to engage this
opportunity. Have a great summer.
