Internet censorship. If you use any VPNs, the Tor network or other services
to access blocked content in your network, chances are that you are using
PTs in the background. This monthly meetup welcomes users, developers and
PT enthusiasts to share their news/updates happening once per month.

### Digital Rights in the Community ####

1. Privacy-Protective Internet Browser Tor Is Running Low on Servers

The Tor browser, arguably the best privacy-protective internet browser
available for most people, is running low on bridge servers, which serve as
entry points into the Tor network for users located in countries that block
access to Tor servers. The decline in servers affects the browser’s ability
to combat censorship and provide a gateway to the open internet in places
where governments and other entities tightly control access to information.
The project is asking volunteers to run private bridge servers.

2. NEW Southeast Asian Coalition on Tech Accountability

Eleven organizations in Southeast Asia have formed a coalition for greater
accountability of tech companies. They are hosting an event on November 30
to introduce the coalition, and share the impact that tech companies are
having on human rights and democracy in the region.

3. Facebook is Bad at Moderating in English. In Arabic, it’s a Disaster

Find out why platforms must work with communities on the ground to design
policies on moderation and be fully transparent about them. Arabic is the
third most common language on Facebook, yet Facebook is muzzling political
speech while leaving hate speech and disinformation that targets at-risk
users, women and people who are LGBTQ+ rampant on the platform. In
addition, Arab activists and journalists who use Facebook to document human
rights abuses and war crimes, are routinely censored and booted off the
platform. Facebook needs to fix its content moderation practices, and
protect its users

4. Police Aerial Surveillance Endangers Our Ability to Protest

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Northern California has
concluded a year-long Freedom of Information campaign by uncovering that
law enforcement have been conducting massie spying on Black Lives Matters
from the air. Not only is dragnet aerial surveillance unconstitutional,
but high-tech political spying makes people vulnerable to retribution and
reprisals by the government. Dragnet surveillance is the collection and
analysis of information on everyone, rather than merely those under
suspicion. It has long been used to stifle free speech and crack down on
government opposition and criticism.

You can sign the ACLU’s petition opposing this surveillance here:

5. Abortion in the Surveillance State

The threat of digital platforms being used to surveil and threaten anyone
who seeks, provides or helps someone obtain an abortion remains larger than
ever. In the USA, anti-abortion groups are relying heavily on digital
surveillance and using and/or partnering with leading social platforms and
search engines to police pregnant people, such as fertility apps. In
addition, Cynthia Conti-Cook, technology fellow at the Ford Foundation, and
author of “Surveilling the Digital Abortion Diary,” also states that there
are much less obvious and more threatening forms of abortion surveillance,
such as bombarding patients with digital anti-abortion ads at or en route
to abortion clinics.

6. Podcast: Every State Govt Wants Facial Recognition Technology, 360
Degrees Surveillance Is Emerging

Anushka Jain of IFF talks to Sidharth Bhatia, explaining the dangers of FRT
and of surveillance and how it discriminates against marginalised
communities and intrudes into everybody’s privacy.

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###

1. Why Gizmodo is Making the Facebook Papers Public

Independent experts from NYU, UMass Amherst, Columbia, Marquette, and the
ACLU are partnering with Gizmodo to responsibly publish the historic
Facebook Papers leak. The documents shared with law enforcement officials
revealed the gravity and scope of Facebook’s design flaws and misdeeds,
which exceeds anything its executives ever divulged to their investors.
Human rights defenders have been urging Facebook to address their flaws and
misdeeds for years, reporting the dramatic impact it was having on human
rights, safety, and free speech in their country.

2. Apple is Suing NSO Group to Curb the Abuse of State-Sponsored Spyware

This past week, Apple filed a lawsuit against NSO Group and its parent
company to hold it accountable for the surveillance and targeting of Apple
users. The complaint provides new information on how NSO Group infected
victims’ devices with its Pegasus spyware. To prevent further abuse and
harm to its users, Apple is also seeking a permanent injunction to ban NSO
Group from using any Apple software, services, or devices. The company also
announced a $10 million contribution to support cybersurveillance
researchers and advocates.

3. Indonesian Court Allows Internet Blocking During Unrest

Indonesia’s Constitutional Court dealt another blow to the free expression
and online privacy rights of the country’s 191 million internet users,
ruling that the government can lawfully block internet access during
periods of social unrest. Internet blackouts undermine opportunities for
democratic participation and have a series of negative consequences
including fueling the spread of disinformation, enforcing censorship,
blocking digital assembly, and crippling documentation of human rights
abuses. SAFENET and Human Rights Watch in Indonesia have been sounding the
alarm about threats to digital rights in Indonesia ever since the
government last year passed, without public consultation, Ministerial
Regulation #5 (“MR 5/2020”), a human rights-invasive law governing online
content and user data and imposing drastic penalties on companies that fail
to comply.

4. Routine Digital Violations Still Rising in the Balkans

The violations recorded in the second half of October show that routine
digital violations are rising in the Balkans. Hate speech, discrimination
and war-mongering flourish in Bosnia’s digital environment, and, following
the introduction of a new decree by the President of the Serb-led entity,
Republika Srpska, digital violations have accelerated further. Local
elections in Hungary and North Macedonia, where ruling parties suffered
setbacks, causing a rise in violations, triggered by a climate of political
antagonism. Meanwhile in Romania, COVID-19 fake news and online harassment
persist.

5. Matrix Resurrections’ Passes China Censorship

The fourth movie in the franchise is expected to be one of the few
Hollywood films to open in the massive China market in the tail end of 2021.

6. A Xiaomi Phone Shipped With A Censorship List In Europe.

This summer, the Lithuanian government went public with an astounding
finding. A Xiaomi phone sold in Europe — the Mi 10T 5G — could censor
approximately 450 words and phrases, it said. The blocklist wasn’t active,
but could be activated remotely. It was filled with political terms,
including “Democratic Movement” and “Long live Taiwan’s independence. After
the government published its findings, things got weird. The list swelled
to more than 1,000 terms, including hundreds of non-political terms like
“pornography,” seemingly to turn the political blocklist into something
more generic. Then, the list disappeared.
