*** RIP Daniel Kaminsky ***

When Daniel Kaminsky saved the internet, he didn't ask for a cent. And
that's just the most famous example of how he lived his life for the
"betterment of our society," says his niece.  Kaminsky, a security
researcher who found a significant security flaw in the internet over
a decade ago, died last week of a diabetic condition. He was 42.

*** Russian Authorities Crack Down on Student Journo Over Protest
Explainer Video ***

On April 14, Russian law enforcement officers searched the Moscow
office of independent student journal DOXA. According to the outlet,
four of its editors also had their apartments searched and were later
charged with inciting minors to participate in illegal protest
rallies.

*** European Parliament Confirms New Online Censorship Powers ***

EU regulation against ‘terrorist’ content online (TERREG) was approved
without a final vote by the European Parliament on April 29th. The
regulation will harm our ability to freely express ourselves and
access information online.

*** Grand Jury Subpoena for Signal User Data, Central District of California ***

Signal has received a subpoena from the United States Attorney’s
Office in the Central District of California.
The subpoena requested a wide variety of information that fell into
this nonexistent category, including the addresses of the users, their
correspondence, and the name associated with each account.

*** Indonesia’s Invisible People Are Facing Discrimination, and
Sometimes Death, by Database ***

LGBTQI communities, religious minorities, and refugees are
systematically excluded from the digital ID system used in Covid-19
vaccination. Indonesia’s identity document, known as the KTP, is the
gateway to officialdom in the country. Starting in 2011, the simple
laminated document with a photo and fingerprints was to be replaced by
a microchipped card backed up by a huge online database.

*** Apple’s AppTrackingTransparency Is Upending Mobile Phone Tracking ***

With the launch of iOS 14.5, hundreds of millions of iPhone users can
now choose what third-party tracking they will or will not tolerate,
and apps will now be forced to request those permissions. This gives
users more knowledge of what apps are doing, protects them from abuse,
and allows them to make the best decisions for themselves.
