*** Facebook Finds Chinese Hacking Operation Targeting Uyghurs ***
Hackers in China used fake Facebook accounts and impostor websites to
hack into computers and smartphones of Uyghur Muslims. Facebook said
the sophisticated, covert operation targeted Uyghur activists,
journalists and dissidents from China’s Xinjiang region, as well as
individuals living in Turkey, Kazakhstan, the U.S, Syria, Australia,
Canada and other nations.

*** TikTok vs Douyin: A Security and Privacy Analysis ***
The newest report out of Citizen Lab, authored by Pellaeon Lin,
provides a comparative analysis of security, privacy, and censorship
issues in TikTok and Douyin, both of which are developed by the same
company, ByteDance. Despite TikTok’s popularity and prominent public
discussions surrounding its security and privacy, neither TikTok nor
Douyin have been thoroughly studied in the past.

*** Google’s Replacement for Third-party Cookies Will Build More Walls
in the Open Web ***
Google will be creating its own set of tools that will allow
advertisers to behaviourally target ads through browser-based APIs
without giving advertisers direct access to individual users’ personal
details. The Privacy Sandbox has included proposals for an array of
open standards which are technically complex and continually evolving,
making the details difficult to pin down. But this complexity also
obscures the real issues at stake — namely, the further enclosure of
digital spaces and the limits of our ability to effectively govern
companies of Google’s size and scale.

Lose Job ***
Amazon delivery drivers nationwide have to sign a "biometric consent"
form this week that grants the tech behemoth permission to use
AI-powered cameras to access drivers' location, movement, and
biometric data.

Unreliable electricity, costly data, poor bandwidth and lack of
infrastructure are just some of the challenges preventing people in
Africa from fully seizing the power of the internet. But no barrier is
more devastating or obstructive than when governments deliberately
plunge citizens into darkness by shutting down the internet.

Movements ***
Pollicy is seeking to better understand how feminist movements in
sub-Saharan Africa can be empowered through the production, sharing
and use of gender data, and how this knowledge can be translated into
actionable recommendations for private technology companies in terms
of how they share non-commercial datasets. This research focuses
specifically on African feminist movements working towards social
justice.

*** Women’s Fund Asia Is Accepting Applications for Two Grantmaking Programs ***
Leading from the South (LFS) is a consortium created to support
feminist activism that is led by women, girls, and trans rights
organisations in the Global South. LFS will strengthen movements,
networks, and organisations—especially their advocacy capacity.
The Strengthening Feminist Movements grantmaking programme is focused
on supporting women, girls, trans, and intersex rights activists,
groups, and networks working on the local, subnational, and national
levels. It is open to individuals and organisations.
Both calls are open to women, girls, trans, and intersex-led
organisations working with a national, regional, and/or global focus.
