Myanmar’s new military-led government has blocked Instagram and Twitter in
an attempt to squash citizen resistance to the coup it staged earlier this
week that ousted the country’s democratically elected government.

*** Singapore's Mandatory Order to Install Surveillance Software ***

Singapore’s Education Ministry has made it mandatory for secondary school
students to install tracking and remote access software on all laptops
issued under a national digital literacy program, and on students’ personal
devices that are used to attend classes online. The software allows school
officials and teachers to go through a student’s web search history and
remotely “view student screens [and] close distracting tabs” in order to
“restrict access to objectionable material,” both during and outside of
school hours. It also allows teachers to restrict the amount of time
students use their devices.

*** Huge Data Leak Put 223m Brazilians' Privacy at Risk ***

On 20 January, the largest personal data leakage in Brazilian history was
discovered. The massive data sets were initially spotted by PSafe, a
cybersecurity start-up, on a Dark Web forum and subsequently reported by
Tecnoblog, a Brazilian tech portal. They exposed 223 million Brazilians.

*** Favicons Can Break Through Incognito Mode, Vpns, and Pi-holes To Track
Your Movement Online. ***

According to a researcher these icons can be a security vulnerability that
could let websites track your movement and bypass VPNs, incognito browsing
status, and other traditional methods of cloaking your movement online. The
tracking method is called a Supercookie.

*** Call for Applications: Internet of Rights Fellowship ***

ARTICLE 19's Team Digital is looking for one to two new fellows to join the
2021-2022 cohort of

the Internet of Rights (IoR) Fellowship. This is a 12-month fellowship,
beginning in April 2021.The Fellowship runs for 12 months, beginning on
April 1, 2021. Deadline is Wednesday, March 3.

*** Freedom of Expression and the Digital Environment in Eastern Africa ***

ARTICLE 19 Eastern Africa’s latest report, Freedom of Expression and the
Digital Environment in Eastern Africa examines the digital environment
across six countries, namely Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan,
Tanzania, and Uganda. The report focuses on developments and challenges
across three key areas, namely: Freedom of expression online, Internet
accessibility and affordability, Privacy and data protection. The report
goes on to provide clear recommendations to address the challenges.

*** The Engine Room’s Matchbox to Focus on Coaching, Knowledge Share, and
Support ***

The Engine Room is redesigning Matchbox to include two components:
project-based support on undertakings with strong tech and data components,
and individual coaching to social justice leaders interested in building
their technical intuitions and capacities. Their regional focus remains on
Africa and Latin America.
