Protest Against Military ***

Myanmar's military rulers have shut down the country's internet as
thousands of people joined the largest rally yet against Monday's coup.

*** Story Time with Internet Storytellers ***

We are teaming up with Mozilla to host a Story Time cafe hour to showcase
some of the voices that took part in their recent Internet Health Report.
These storytellers will share some of the healthy and unhealthy moments of
2020 in their respective regions. In addition, Laura Vidal will discuss the
findings of the Internet Health report, and we will host a collaborative
conversation so, collectively, we can map out the needs and desires for the
future for a healthy internet. The event will take place on February 26

*** Article 19 Wants your Feedback***

Article 19 wants to hear your suggestions and thoughts on their Global
Expression Report (GxR), which was published in December 2020. They want
folks to fill out a survey, which will take only 5 minutes to complete. You
can also find the link to the report  on the surrey as well.

*** Iran Blocks Signal Messaging App after WhatsApp Exodus ***

Iran’s government has moved to block Signal after Iranians flocked to the
messaging platform following privacy concerns from Facebook-owned WhatsApp.
The app was tagged by a filtering committee tasked with identifying
“criminal content” that is headed by the country’s prosecutor general and
consists of representatives from the judiciary, the communications
ministry, law enforcement, the parliament, and the education ministry among
others.

*** Serbia: International Mission to Assess Media Freedom ***

An online international mission to assess the state of media freedom and
the safety of journalists in Serbia took place on 28 January to 1 February
2021. The mission was led by ARTICLE 19 as part of the Media Freedom Rapid
Response (MFRR), which monitors, tracks and responds to violations of press
freedom and threats against journalists and media workers in European Union
Member States and Candidate Countries. The mission was organised in
partnership with the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS).

Safeguards Are in Place in Latin America and Spain? ***

Check out EFF’s post exploring their new State of Communications Privacy
Laws report, which explores privacy and data protection in various Latin
America countries and Spain. The research builds upon work from the
Necessary and Proportionate Principles—guidelines for  evaluating whether
digital surveillance laws are consistent with human rights safeguards.

*** Hyperlocal Digital Security Guides in Latin America ***

Check out the 14 recipients of the Internews Digital Security Local Content
Creation Grant. Selected projects  were chosen because they strengthen,
connect and expand the Latin American network of digital security trainers.
They also have been developed in conjunction with indigenous, Afro,
LGBTIQ+, and women’s communities in the Andean Region.

The Tor Project has a great fanzine that sintetize the basics for
onionizing your workflow by starting to use OnionShare, SecureDrop, and
Ricochet Refresh. The guide helps you to understand how to work with the
Tor Onion Service and is a great resource for educating on
decentralization, network sustainability, and other privacy and freedom
issues.
