*** The Taliban Have Seized U.S. Military Biometrics Devices ***

The Taliban have seized U.S. military biometrics devices that could
aid in the identification of Afghans who assisted coalition forces.
The devices, known as HIIDE, for Handheld Interagency Identity
Detection Equipment, were seized last week during the Taliban’s
offensive.

*** Afghans Scramble to Delete Digital History, Evade Biometrics ***

Thousands of Afghans struggling to ensure the physical safety of their
families after the Taliban took control of the country have an
additional worry: that biometric databases and their own digital
history can be used to track and target them. After years of a push to
digitise databases in the country, and introduce digital identity
cards and biometrics for voting, activists warn these technologies can
be used to target and attack vulnerable groups.

*** Spyware Scandal: UN Experts Call for Moratorium on Sale of ‘Life
Threatening’ Surveillance Tech ***

Two years ago the then UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and
Expression published a report on the dangerous impact of surveillance
technology on human rights and recommended an immediate moratorium on
its sale and transfer until international regulations incorporating
human rights safeguards were adopted. The international community
failed to heed his call.

*** A 5G Shortcut Leaves Phones Exposed to Stingray Surveillance ***

To get 5G out to the masses quickly, most carriers around the world
deployed it in something called “non-standalone mode” or
“non-standalone architecture.” The approach essentially uses existing
4G network infrastructure as a jumping off point to put out 5G data
speeds before the separate, "standalone" 5G core is built. This means
that as long as your 5G connection is in non-standalone mode, a lot of
what you're getting is still actually 4G, complete with security and
privacy weaknesses that actual 5G aims to address.

*** Big Tech Call Center Workers Face Pressure to Accept Home Surveillance ***

Colombia-based call center workers who provide outsourced customer
service to some of the nation’s largest companies are being pressured
to sign a contract that lets their employer install cameras in their
homes to monitor work performance.

*** Engrave Danger: Citizen Lab’s Analysis of Apple Engraving
Censorship Across Six Regions ***

Across all six regions they analyzed, Citizen Lab found that Apple’s
content moderation practices pertaining to derogatory, racist, or
sexual content are inconsistently applied and that Apple’s
public-facing documents failed to explain how it derives their keyword
lists. Besides this, Citizen Lab found that part of Apple’s mainland
China political censorship bleeds into both Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Mass surveillance is not an acceptable crime-fighting strategy, no
matter how well-intentioned the spying. If you’re upset about Apple’s
recent announcement that the next version of iOS will install
surveillance software in every iPhone, You can sign EFF’s petition.

Time to come together around equity, healing and learning! We are
launching a Community Health Village whose theme will be Sustainable
Networks & Movements. Deadline for submissions will be September 9.
Specifically, we are looking for a diversity of proposals that explore
themes related to health and healing through a community lens. This
ranges from mental health to employee wellbeing to restorative
artistic practices.
