*** Tunisia: A Grave Step in The Wrong Direction ***

The measures taken on July 25, 2021 by the President of the Tunisian
Republic, Kais Saied, place Tunisia in a grave situation, effectively
suspending the democratic system with no guarantees for its reinstatement.
Human rights are also at risk, in particular freedom of expression as
attacks on press freedom and the right to information continue.

*** Belarus: Free Expression Groups Urge International Community To Assist
Victims Of Crackdown ***

One year after the rigged elections in Belarus, the country is being
overrun with a radical crackdown on free speech and humanitarian
organizations by the dictatorial Lukashenko regime. More than 1,500
organizations have been targeted by the “radical cleansing”, 41 are already
on trial for state-ordered dissolution, including the writers’ organization
PEN Belarus and the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ). The
chairman of the Union of Belarusian Writers, poet Barys Piatrovich, is
under house arrest and a communication ban.

*** Iran Aims to End Online Freedoms “for Good” ***

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have been banned in Iran since 2009.
Telegram, which has 49 million users in Iran, has been banned since 2018.
Furthermore, over the past few months, the state has used throttling to
disrupt access to WhatsApp, Instagram, and Clubhouse. The new legislation
is expected to further tighten the net by imposing a blanket ban against
all international services. International online services providers—from
Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, and smaller service providers—will
have to agree to operate within the laws and regulations of the Islamic
Republic, and collaborate with the state in surveillance and censorship
operations.

*** Malaysia: How ‘fake News’ On The Hong Kong Protests Reached Their
Shores ***

Unlike the protests themselves which were largely contained within Hong
Kong, this information war soon became a disinformation race that involved
both China’s state media and anti-Chinese Communist Party (CCP) forces, and
which eventually spread to different countries including Malaysia.

*** What Journalists Should Know About Detecting and Mitigating Pegasus
Spyware ***

Pegasus is built to exploit security vulnerabilities in mobile phones,
giving government clients remote access to targeted users’ call logs,
messages, contact lists, location, and smartphone cameras and microphones.
Freedom of Press Foundation highlights a couple of lists of publicly known
cases, as well as detection tools that can help journalists learn more
about whether Pegasus resides on any of your devices.

*** An Unhealthy Diet of Targeted Ads: An Investigation in to How the Diet
Industry Exploits our Data ***

As part of their research into the “AdTech” industry, Privacy International
noticed that the diet ads they were targeted with led them to tests aimed
at creating a so-called profile of their body and eating habits, to design
a dieting program, which they said were specific for their needs. Privacy
International looked into those tests to find out what data those companies
were collecting, what those programs involved, where the data was going,
and who it was shared with.

*** Announcing U.S. Journalism School Digital Security Curriculum ***

Freedom of Press Foundation is sharing the U.S. Journalism School Digital
Security Curriculum, a resource to assist journalism school instructors in
bringing digital security know-how to their program. This is a
semester-long curriculum, complete with slides, lesson plans, and more.
With attribution, instructors may use and adapt the materials to their own
needs, for free.

Time to come together around equity, healing and learning! We are launching
a Community Health Village whose theme will be Sustainable Networks &
Movements. Deadline for submissions will be September 9. Specifically, we
are looking for a diversity of proposals that explore themes related to
health and healing through a community lens. This ranges from mental health
to employee wellbeing to restorative artistic practices.
