***A Primer on Surveillance Issues in the Disability Community ***

As privacy activists, we’re often called on to suggest alternatives to
technologies that spy on us and sell our data. For disabled people,
opting out of data sharing isn’t always the best choice. Sometimes
that choice is taken away from. What happens when the network effect
is the difference between getting support and being alone with some
tough decisions?

*** Internal Facebook Email Reveals Intent To Frame Data Scraping as
‘Normalized’ ***

An internal email accidentally leaked by Facebook to a journalist has
revealed the firm's intentions to frame a recent data scraping
incident as "normalized" and a "broad industry issue." Facebook has
recently been at the center of a data scraping controversy. Earlier
this month, Hudson Rock researchers revealed that information
belonging to roughly 533 million users had been posted online,
including phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, and dates of birth.

*** Apple Will Let Parler Back on the App Store ***

Apple has approved Parler's return to the iOS app store following
improvements the social media company made to better detect and
moderate hate speech and incitement, according to a letter the iPhone
maker sent to Congress on Monday.

*** Hong Kong's pro-Beijing Camp Wants to ‘Get Rid of’ Pro-democracy
Newspaper Apple Daily ***

Hong Kong's independent media are anticipating a sweeping purge of the
critical press in the coming weeks. In a public speech delivered on
“national security education day” on April 15, Police Chief Chris Tang
accused a few media outlets of “disseminating fake news” that “serves
the interests of foreign forces.

*** Thailand: Draft Legislation To Strictly Control All Kinds of
Groups Could Crush Civil Society ***

Thailand’s Office of the Council of State put forward the Draft Act on
Operations of Not-for-Profit Organisations. Under the proposed
legislation, any group engaged in non-profit activities – no matter
how small, informal or unorganised – would be required to register
with the Ministry of Interior. Student groups, community
organisations, protest movements, artistic collectives, social clubs
and short-lived associations would all fall within the remit of the
law.

*** Myanmar: Military Coup has Pushed Country’s Digital Economy to the
Brink of Collapse ***

The junta’s internet blockages have shut down
swathes of the online economy, its violence against civilians has left
many people afraid to leave their homes, and the coup has left the
country internationally isolated, disrupting the flow of money into
and around the country. A civil disobedience movement, which includes
massive workplace walkouts, has shut down banks and businesses. All
together, this has pushed Myanmar’s nascent digital economy to the
brink.

*** Israeli Cyber Firm NSO Negotiates with Jordanian Intelligence ***

Israeli cyber intelligence firm NSO negotiated with the Jordanian
government in recent months on a deal to sell new spying technology.
Sources say the negotiations between NSO and the Jordanian government
started late last year.

*** Brave, Vivaldi, Edge, and Mozilla Will Not Join Google’s FLoC ***

Google is going it alone with its proposed advertising technology to
replace third-party cookies. Every major browser that uses the open
source Chromium project has declined to use it, and it’s unclear what
that will mean for the future of advertising on the web.

*** WhatsApp Spying Site Blames WhatsApp for Letting It Spy ***

The administrator of a website that let anyone enter the phone numbers
of two or more WhatsApp users, and see in an easy to understand
visualization when each person was using the app, potentially
indicating who was talking to who, has blamed WhatsApp for allowing
such a capability to exist.

*** “A Safer Web for Women” Comic Is Now Available in English and
Kiswahili by KICTANet ***

The Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet) has produced a comic strip
comic that explains violence against women online, and simplifies the
challenges faced by women online. The comic strip is available in
English and Kiswahili.

*** Open Call for Initiative for Digital Rights in Latin America ***

Indela's 2021 open call is seeking applications for amounts up to
US$25,000 that would be used to implement urgently needed digital
rights projects in Latin America that will be completed within a
six-month period. As in past years, each selected project will also
have the option of a specialized consultancy, intended to strengthen
the development and impact of the project, and/or the work of the
applicant organization. The open call will run from April 15 to May
15, 2021.

*** The Invisible Internet Project Needs Feedback! ***

The Invisible Internet Project (I2P) is a fully encrypted private
network layer that provides protection for user activity, location and
identity. The software ships with a router that connects a user to the
network and applications for sharing, communicating and building.
Internews is conducting I2P website efficiency studies to understand
how users are interacting with specific pages and workflows. They are
seeking volunteers to participate in a virtual user testing session
that lasts 30 minutes. If you would like to take part or you have
questions please send an email to helen.kagumya at gmail.com with the
subject line “I2P user test”
