*** Welcome Selma Zaki, Our New Community Health Researcher! ***

We are happy to announce Selma Zaki as our new Community Health
Researcher. Besides being a mental health counselor, Selma has also
conducted  qualitative research, most recently studying the experiences
of gender amongst Arab-American women. In her role, Zelma will be
working both researching and writing  our first ever Community Health
Report. Please help us welcome her!

*** Facebook’s Oversight Board Won’t Launch in Time to Oversee the US
Election ***

It’s been more than a year since Facebook pledged to launch its
independent Oversight Board, which will now launch in October. This
means it will be too late  to hear cases related to the US election, and
activists are not happy.

*** The DRL Request for SOIs is Live***

The DRL Internet Freedom Annual Program Request for Statements of
Interest is live. It can be found on Grants.gov and on SAMS domestic
under opportunity number SFOP0007349. Submissions are due November 9, 2020.


*** Nominate a Community Leader for the Mozilla Internet Health Report
New Feature ***

Mozilla’s upcoming Internet Health Report report will include a new
collaborative feature that they are tentatively calling a  "A People’s
Index of Internet Health".  This feature will highlight links submitted
by community leaders about a healthy moment or something that can be
done to help the internet, as well as an unhealthy moment or something
that worries them.  Please help them find those community leaders by
nominating folks in your network!

*** Millions in Asia face 'extreme' Covid Surveillance ***

Draconian surveillance measures introduced during the Covid-19 epidemic
are handing “unchecked powers” to authoritarian regimes across Asia,
human rights experts are warning.

*** German-made FinSpy Spyware Found in Egypt, and Mac and Linux
Versions Revealed ***

According to media reports, when Egyptian protesters broke into the
offices of the now dissolved State Security Investigations Service, they
discovered contracts for the sale of FinSpy to Egyptian authorities.
Since then, research groups such as Citizen Lab, at the University of
Toronto, and Privacy International have discovered FinSpy being used to
target HRDs and civil society in many countries, including Bahrain,
Turkey and Ethiopia.

*** Poland: Crackdown On LGBT Activists ***

In recent weeks, the police have arrested LGBT rights activists for
peaceful protest actions on the basis of an overly broad blasphemy law,
violating freedom of expression and signaling the further deterioration
of the rule of law in Poland.

*** Ranking Digital Rights: New Index Methodology Available in Arabic,
French, and Spanish ***

Ranking Digital Rights has released translations for their 2020 RDR
Index methodology, which features new indicators evaluating big tech
company policies on ad targeting and algorithmic systems. It is now
available in Arabic, French and Spanish.
