***  Unprecedented Escalation: Egypt Orders The Detention of EIPR’s 
Administrative Manager ***

The Egyptian authorities have arrested Mohamed Bashseer, the 
Administrative Manager of the e Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, 
and detained him for more than 12 hours in a State Security Sector 
facility. Among the many things he was accused of, was “Using a personal 
account on the internet to spread false information that undermines 
public security”

*** Myanmar Tightens Censorship of Internet Post-Election ***

Myanmar’s government has ordered mobile operators to introduce filtering 
to censor specific keywords across the internet and block access to 
another three websites. The measures to tighten online censorship were 
put in place days after the November 8th elections.

*** Germany Criticizes China for Dismissal of Hong Kong Opposition 
Lawmakers ***

Germany has criticized China for the dismissal of several pro-democracy 
opposition lawmakers from the city assembly in Hong Kong. A foreign 
ministry spokesman said the decision to remove four opposition members 
of Hong Kong’s legislative council was the latest step of a “deeply 
worrying” trend which was aimed at undermining pluralism and freedom of 
expression.

*** Lebanon Abstained from Signing the Global " Media Freedom Coalition" 
Statement ***

Lebanon was the only country out of 37 member states to not sign the 
statement, which calls on coalition members to work together to advocate 
for and support media freedom, online as well as offline, ensure the 
safety of journalists and media workers, and end impunity.

*** How the U.S. Military Buys Location Data from Ordinary Apps ***

The U.S. military is buying the granular movement data of people around 
the world, harvested from innocuous-seeming apps, Motherboard has 
learned. The most popular app among a group Motherboard analyzed 
connected to this sort of data sale is a Muslim prayer and Quran app 
that has more than 98 million downloads worldwide. Others include a 
Muslim dating app, a popular Craigslist app, an app for following 
storms, and a "level" app that can be used to help, for example, install 
shelves in a bedroom.

*** New Organizational Security Tool Released by Ford Foundation***

The Ford Foundation’s Cybersecurity Assessment Tool (CAT) is out! It is 
designed to help organizations measure the maturity, resiliency, and 
strength of their cybersecurity efforts. The tool is designed to be 
taken as a survey in one 30 minute sitting.

*** Call for Partnership: Building Innovative Solutions for Journalists 
to Counter Disinformation in Latin America with IWPR ***

The Institute for War & Peace Reporting is seeking a partner to support  
the region's journalism and media sector develop and pilot new, 
innovative and evidence based solutions to confront the problems of mis 
and disinformation, which threaten their societies.  Applications are

*** Localization Lab’s India Localization Sprint 2020 Registration Is 
Open ***

Localization Lab, The Bachchao Project, Random Hacks of Kindness and 
DataMeet will be hosting a 4-day localization sprint (spanning two 
weekends: November 28 and 29, and December 5 and 6) that will focus on 
localizing one tool each day into a diversity of Indian languages: 
Signal, Psiphon, Safe Sisters and Tella. The event will involve tool 
demos, discussion around terminology and translation style, and Q&As 
with the tool and guide developers.
